Headlight switch replacement

There was a thread on this a few years ago but due to the age it would not let me post so i am Trying to remove headlight switch and have the panel loose and access to the switch. I have pushed on the button really hard yet the shaft will not release from the switch.. I am missing something? It is a standard old style ACDelco D1588 GM Original Equipment Headlamp Switch. Have one coming looks like what is installed there is no real PN I can see. I don't have any instrument lights and it points to this switch

I've been in same boat. Hold down the release button again, and at same time wiggle your finger on it in a circular motion. At same time, try moving the knob in and out a little bit. Some are like that and others come out first try. Hopefully, you'll hit the right combination.

Again, as mentioned above, the headlight switch has to be in the on position.
