My thoughts exactly Max!
Newbie Lisa here:
We do not currently own a MH but are considering a 2001 Dynasty and I am more than a little bit concerned about the age of what may be a perfect rig for us. This timely thread has started to ease some of those concerns.
Unlike Max, I do not have a mechanical background. My question to all of you is this rig is on a dealer lot and we are wondering how we go about having this independently evaluated prior to buying and minimizing our surprises later. Is this type of thing usually negotiated into the sales process if we make an offer and make it subject to independent evaluation? Or is there another way?
Secondly, is there some sort of RV Tech evaluation/certification association that can direct me to an RV inspector in my area? I'm sure these specialists have a title that I am not yet familiar with.
Thank you in advance for all of your assistance and for sharing your incredible wealth of knowledge!
Sincerely,
-Lisa.

I would take it to cummins and have the engine checked out.
If also have a local shop look at the rig and check all the systems.
You want to make sure the tires are under 5 years. They are date coded. Regardless of how they look
I have a 2001 diplomat and just turned 129K miles it's been trouble free

That's exactly how it's done, with heavy emphasis on "independant". That really needs to be done by a third party.

We purchased a 2002 Monaco Windsor in late 2008, it had +50K miles on it but was in very good condition. It was a repo and sold AS IS. I inspected the coach myself and could not find anything wrong. It came with ZERO maintenance records.
I immediately took it to the Cummins shop for a complete inspection and maintenance regime of filters, oil, lube etc. They also ran a diagnostic on the engine. The shop manager, who I knew personally, gave the rig a big thumbs up a said I had gotten a "Cherry" rig. The shop does all the work for Buddy Gregg in Knoxville so they were familiar with Monaco's.
I then took and had new front tires on and had a wheel alignment as the Goodyears showed signs of misalignment. The replacement Bridgestones still look like new and I have since put 4 new ones on the rear in 2011.
We have since put ~49K on the rig and will be turning over 100K when we get back home from our 6 week trip of +2500 miles. We have had normal problems with the most costly being having to replace the Allison ECM.
I agree with posts, the Monaco Coach is a great coach and you could hardly go wrong with a purchase if the rig is in good condition. If you are not capable of inspecting the rig get someone who knows this type of rig to look it over.

Great information
Thank you for taking the time to reply. I'm contacting some of RV specialists for inspections, talking to Cummings and I'll get the tire codes as well. I'm sure this will bring more questions.
Cheers!
-Lisa.

Dom I think about all the info has been covered just want to tell you that when Monaco went into bankruptcy Monacoers Yahoo forum made a parts list and where to purchase parts for the Monaco coaches, the list does not have everything as it is a on going job to add to the list. Well worth the effort to join just to have the list.
