High Water Temp & Check Engine light on
1997 Monaco, Dynasty - Cummins 8.3 Ler, 325 hp with 24,200 miles. I just left Port St. Lucie, Fla. and the High Water Temp & Check Engine light came on! all gauges show as should, cooling temp at dash and at engine bay showed about 180 degrees. An alarm sounds while both of the idiot lights are on. the coach still runs great! does anyone have a clue what would cause the High Water Temp light tocome on and the water temp shows it is as should be? HELP! Thanks, Al

Al, have you checked to see if the overflow tank is properly filled? One other thought I have is with a coach of the vintage with so little mileage on it, corrosion could be on the sensor connectors.
Just a side note. Have you done the recommended radiator service, had the air drier serviced, changed the air filter, had the transmission and axle fluids changed anywhere near the recommended spec time? I hope you have done at least the oil and filters. You could call the Cummins hot line or, if on a Freightliner chassis, their hot line.

Al, the Check Engine Light is probably on because of the Water Over Temp light being on. If I remember correctly the water temp sensor has two connectors on it. One for the light and one for the gauge. The sensor is located all the way at the back of the cylinder head on top of the motor. You should take a look and see if both wires are connected tight. If the are tight then my guess is since your gauge is reading correctly that half the sensor has failed. One of my wires came loose on my previous motorhome with the same engine as yours and it did the same thing.

Might try and remove the sensor in the overflow bottle and clean it with steel wool or a rough pot scrubber then reinstall it.
Good luck, good health and safe travels!

Hey Willie Fud guy. Did you fly them in the Navy or Air Force.
The OP said overtemp and not low water. Different sensor.

Your engine has 2 temp sensors. One for the gauge and one for the computer. I have a scan gauge-D you can get on Amazon. It plugs into your computer plug under the dash. I bought it so I can see if my idiot lights and gauges are showing the correct information. To my knowledge if the computer reads wrong temperatures or other bad inputs the red warning light comes on. I certainly wouldn't ignore it until
You know what's going on. But the scan gauge-D will really help.
It also gives you and error code the computer has in it.
