House batteries

Could weak house batteries cause the 10K Onan/Cummins Quiet Diesel generator to shut down?

Thank you,

It depends on whether or not the Generator is connected to the House batteries or Chassis batteries.

Usually the Gen is powered off the Chassis batteries, so if you drain the House batteries (say Bondocking) you can still start the generator off the chassis batteries and charge up the House batteries.

However, if the generator is running (and working properly) it should be providing 240/120VAC to the Inverter-Charger which would then be charging both battery groups.

Another thought - if your generator is running off the House batteries and your BigBoy solenoid is not working, the charging voltage could be charging the Chassis batteries only (i.e. the primary connection) but not able to get to the House batteries because of the faulty BigBoy. Then once the House batteries drop too low there isn't enough 12V power for the Gen electronics and it shuts off. In this case your House batteries would be dead.

Not likely. Generally, if the generator starts, the battery has done it's job.

My coach is a 2001 Alpine. I made an illustration that shows how things are powered in my coach. My generator starts off the house batteries. Power from the generator is routed through the transfer switch, then to the main AC panel. The inverter is powered from the main AC panel and charges the batteries.

Some coaches are made where the generator/shore power charges the house batteries, and the alternator charges the chassis batteries. Many coaches have equipment that allow cross charging from either source. On my coach, it is the echo charger that performs this function.

You haven't told us much about what your problem is except that your generator shuts down. How long does it run? How often does this happen? Will it restart? Have you tested your batteries? Do you know which battery bank starts your generator? I can make some wild guesses, but they are just that - guesses. I'd first suspect fuel level/fuel filter. Then I would be concerned about oil level. Then I would look for loose connections.

Which set of batteries powers your generator fuel pump? If they get too low then the generator will shut down.
