How hot should Endeavor run?

This HR Endeavor has the 400 hp Cummins with an Allison 3000 transmission. On an hour drive today on flat highway with afternoon temps just over 100 degrees, maintaining 60-62 mph, the engine got up to 204 degrees and the transmission was almost the same. These temps seem high to me. Is 200 degrees typical for the Cummins ISL and the Allison transmission?

180 to 190 should be normal. However climbing a grade it could get to 200 or a bit more. Could be your gauges are off a bit. The main to watch is if the temp keeps on climbing. Then your engine is out of control and the safety controls will shut you down. Water boils at 212 degrees at sea level. But with a 7-10 lb pressure cap and 50-50 antifreeze solution there should be no boil over til 225 degrees or higher. Diesel like heat so the hotter they run, under control, the better.

Mike,

Are you reading 204 degrees from the stock Monaco dash or do you have a VMSpc? There is no way to get that kind of reading from our 2006 Diplomat dash. It is C on one end and H on the other. We have the VMSpc and our temps are usually around 185 to 195. In 100 degree outside ambient it might be a little higher. How long has it been since you cleaned the radiator? These rear radiator coaches can build up dust, dirt, and debris reducing the cooling capacity of the radiator.

On our '06 Dynasty we run around 205 on the ISL and between 200 and 205 on the Allison, both summer (including a trip thru Reading, CA with temps in the mid-one-teens) and winter (We live in Idaho). Those are as displayed on the Aladdin. At those temperatures, I don't recall ever hearing the intake fan going into high speed operation. The only times I've seen either temp go much higher are on long grades using the Jake, and the transmission temp can get up into the mid-two-teens. When it gets up there, I take action to not go any higher.

I assume you have the Aladdin system since you mention specific temperatures.
I also own an '06 Endeavor and on the flat my engine temps are 184 to 187. Climbing mountains it increases to over 200 and sometimes I have seen 212.
I cleaned my radiator and brought those temperatures down. I didn't extend the slobber tube so the radiator is getting oily again. This is on my to do list.

Yes, those readings are off the Aladdin display. The gauge needle is at or above the top hash mark before the red. The coach is new to me so I don't know when the radiator was last cleaned. When I got to town and slowed to 45 mph the engine dropped 10 degrees and the transmission dropped 15 degrees.

Shop WEB Coil Cleaner at Lowes.com
This stuff works incredibly well. Two cans, one for each side of the radiator. This works well on the AC condensers as well.

Sounds fine but as suggested cleaning the radiator is a good idea and you may see a few degrees lower. If you are sitting in traffic on a hot day keep an eye on the temps. The transmission can cause the temps to rise quite a bit. If delayed much just shift into neutral and the temps will drop down.
