I don't doubt that there is contamination and it's possibly lodged in the steering gear box somewhere in the left turn circuit.
However, if the right turn still works ok wouldn't the pump probably be ok?
I gather the owner isn't into doing his own work, but I would try draining, back flush the gear box, clean fluid reservoir & replace filters & fluid.
IMHO it would be worth a try, but maybe not at shop prices.
