in-motion v trav'ler
Hi Guys,
I checked my old trav'ler and its getting a azmuth stalled message. I opened it to make sure the azmuth race bearing is aligned. It was to one side but between the things it was supposed to be.
So winegard says I need a new one cause mine is over six years old. I dont know why I need a new one, its kinda crazy that one can't be fixed. The azmuth race bearing doesn't seem to be connected to anything.
Anyway, they have a refurbished dome type in-motion, I guess, for the same money as a new trav'ler.
I use dishnetwork for my programming. I seem to remember that the dome type is not any good for hi def. I can't even look at standard def anymore. I really don't/can't watch TV while going down the road, although it might be handy if I needed to record something.
Does the in-motion dome fit in the same screw holes on the roof?
Is there a possibliity that my G2 tailgate could be used up there?
At this point I am maintaining my rig for a possible sale. I have maybe less than a handful of years left of ownership.
If I can get any guidance on this, I would appreciate it. I have a direct tv antenna I took off of it years ago when I bought the rig if anyone needs one.
I searched the forums but couldn't find the info I needed on this. Winegard was no help, do you believe that?

Get a dish tailgater and then you can just set it outside when needed. They also make an alarm system that screws onto the cable at the back of the Wally. It sounds off if someone disconnects the cable at the tailgater. I have these. I also have the wineguard t4 inmotion. In case we’re under trees in a campground I use the tailgater. Both work for our needs and am very Happy with them. Purchased them on EBay. Didn’t pay the $1200 for the t4, paid $800 new in box. The t4 does dish, direct tv and bell satellites by changing the dip switches inside the unit.

Our Travl'r worked just fine after 10 years and is probably working fine after we sold it. See if you can find a used one for sale and strip it for parts and get another 10 years. Chuck

I wish I could fix it Chuck but I have no idea whats wrong with it. I can hear the motors running so thats not it.
So the in-motion dome will get HD, right? I think directv doesn't get HD with the dome.
Just looking at the situation, it would seem to me that the dome unit would last a real long time because it is enclosed. The antenna still rotates but its protected and I guess I could remove the "visual check antenna down" off my Departing Checklist.
Any problems changing from the trav'ler to the dome?

My coach originally had an old I think it was an HVH? or something like that on the roof. It was 3ft round. I used the existing rg6 to connect the t4 and the existing hot and ground to power the t4 with no issues. You can check the specs on the t4 on the winegard website

You know I keep thinking there was something that the dome units could not do versus the dish units. I know you cant get hi def with directv and a dome. it was something else. Was it internet service? or something to do with cell reception? I can't remember.
Do I need to pull the old winegard power supply through the roof to install the new wires to the rocker switch?
It looks like the dome type only uses 12v. I dont think I have 12v in the entertainment center above the passenger seat. Do you guys use a cigarette lighter converter? Thats what I use for my portable G2.
Let me know, thanks again

Direct TV does not even use the old low def satellites as far as I know. Can't say about Direct.
I think there is a reset feature in the power box for the Travler. I have not had any issues in a long long time so would have to open my manual.
You can also manually select one satellite for testing.
The little jumper wires inside the bottom of the turret are notorious for failing. Poor signal across one of those might contribute to your problem.
If you had to have 12 volts for something new you can easily buy a standalone power supply. Astron makes many models.
Personally, I would not get the dome. We did have an in motion dome when new (2008), and replaced it with a Travler because the in motion was becoming obsolete and we wanted HD.
And just one more thing. You can't have a leaf or twig in the sight picture of the dish. I have actually had one tall skinny palm tree block just one satellite. That was fun to diagnose. Moveing the RV just a couple of feet solved the issue.
You can get an app that will let you actually look through your phone camera and see your sight picture. You can select Direct or Dish, or even select one satellite for example.

When I bought my 2005 Winnie. about a year ago it had the dish tailgater on it. It evidently had the HVH? system or something similar. It had some sort of control that was unhooked, and I called a number on it, and I was told that company had nothing to do with the dish. It is on the roof and has just the coax going to it. I'm still trying to figure the whole thing out. It wants to lose the satellites while not watching tv but otherwise it seems to work ok. Part of the problem seems to be the tv itself. I don't sit in one place more than a few days so that may be the problem.

Yes, the G2 will word and can be mounted on the roof. Dish is HD only now, the old sat is no longer used, I had a G2 mount on the roof using some 'Z' brackets before I went to the Trav'lr

What receiver are you using? My Travl'r is over 15 years old & works great with my Hopper & Joey. As I recall, the portables and dome did not work with the Hopper. I'll get a new Travl'r when mine gives up the ghost. Perhaps you can find a used salvage one as people switch to Internet streaming. YMMV
