Leveling jack movement & noise after extending

We have HWH Power Gear leveling system, 3 jacks. Four air bags, if that makes a difference. I usually lower the jacks manually.

Has anyone ever experienced noise or movement of their leveling jacks after extending them? Not right after putting them down, but overnight. During the night it seems a jack perhaps isn't holding the load and gave a little, enough movement to wake me. We haven't noticed it during the day, only at night. There was also a loud 'thunk'.

I called HWH and although we are 2 months out of our original 1 year warranty, they said they would cover a repair if needed. We took our 2008 Cayman into the nearest HWH service center and after they went through the motions, they said it probably only needed to be recalibrated. We were not impressed with the service center efforts, but I won't go into it here. Perhaps on our blog.

Anyway... does anyone have any experience with jacks that go bump in the night?

Hi Mic and Rick, on our 'old' Beaver, which had both airbag leveling and hydraulic jacks, it would check it's level consistently, and add air as needed, so yes, sometimes it was making noise in the middle of the night. Are you sure yours isn't just doing what it is supposed to do?

I had the same thing happen but only when the rear jacks are fully extended. From what I've been reading replacing the hydraulic fluid with synthetic fluid will solve the problem.....Bruce

To find out what is really going on you need to make a couple meaningful observations. Hold two sharpie marker pens (pref different colors) together and mark the silver HWH jack cylinders so that one mark is essentially at the level of the jack housing and the second mark is like a 1/4"-1/2" below it. Mark all jacks and wait. Monitor those marks over time to determine 1) if atmospheric pressure changes might actually be lifting/lowering the rig, 2) if nothing happens, or 3) if the jacks are actually coming down.

Doing this experiment is the only way you'll know what is going on and at what rate. There are thunk situations involving sticky/dirty shuttle valves and the like. Synthetic fluid will do absolutely nothing - except perhaps flush particles out of the shuttle valves - but that is not the synthetic fluid doing anything it's just a byproduct of a fluid change.

Report back...

Thank you for all the comments and suggestions. Just to clarify my first post, our jacks are hydraulic, not air bag leveling.

Last night we stayed at Cabela's and didn't use the jacks. Today we arrived at our "summer home" and our site is almost level, and with the help of one board under the driver's side front wheel we were really, really close. In fact, we were level, I just wanted the jacks for stabilization. I let the jacks extend automatically this time, with the front extending first, then the 2 in the rear, and very quickly (quicker than usual) we got the green light that we were level.

While driving today I thought about marking the jacks with a Sharpie to see if they are actually retracting, so 'thank you' for confirming my thoughts. I will read the other links to see what they have to offer also.

Last week we were on very uneven ground and we could not get level without lifting the wheels off the ground, which we didn't do. We may have had the jacks fully extended. The service center could not get one of the rear jacks to fully extend, but then they also didn't understand how our air bag system works.

The service center recommended synthetic fluid to resolve the issue = 10 quarts and 2 hours labor, but we said we would wait on changing the fluid since they had just recalibrated the jacks. They also said the change in night and day temperature could make the jacks move. That's hard for me to believe since days were 95 and nights were 80. We've been in more severe temp changes without effecting the jacks.

I'm hoping that the recalibration synchronized the system and that somehow we just got it confused. I think we will know in the next few days and at least I have it on file with HWH who was considerate to offer a repair out of warranty.

I'll post follow up when I have something more. Thanks again.

Your statment said you have HWH/power gear levelers. Please explain which type of systems they are. I didn't know HWH systems were available on 08 caymans.

Can I blame it on too many Negro Modelos?

Jethro, you are right to question my thinking that we had HWH. We don't have HWH jacks, but we do have Power Gear. What's funny is that I did my research on Power Gear systems and for some reason called HWH when I thought we might have something wrong. They didn't question me when I gave them all my coach info and model numbers. Oh well, with HWH we'd only have a one year warranty, but with Power Gear we have a 2 year warranty. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

It's been 5 nights now with no noise from the jacks or anywhere else on the coach for that matter. The jacks are behaving perfectly and the recalibration must have done the job. I had put them up and down so many times in Las Vegas they were sure to be confused. The temp swings here have been from the 30's to the 90's so the wide temperature changes were not the culprit. Glad we didn't jump to the synthetic fluid. I know that we could have done the recalibration ourselves, but the service center had spent 30 minutes and was going to charge us for 30 minutes even if they didn't do the recalibration. So we had them do it.

We're glad that all is well with our Monaco coach. We are really enjoying it.
