Looking at a 2005 Cayman 36PDQ Questions

Hi I'm looking at a 2005 Monaco Cayman with 30K miles on it. What maintenance should have been performed up to this mileage and what maintenance would be upcoming through say 75K miles? I'm mostly interested in the maintenance items that will be costly. Any other pros or cons on the 4 slide 36PDQ?

First question is have the trailing arms been replaced. This model of the R4R chassis had a known problem with cracks in the trailing arms. The preferred replacement are manufactured by Source Engineering. You might want to check their site for information on the Ride Enhancement Kit for the R4R chassis.

Of course look at the tires to determine if they are more that 6-7 years old based on the DOT codes.

Check the house and chassis batteries. 5-6 years are about the max on these.

Otherwise 2005 was a great build year for Monaco product.

Good Luck

X2 on the trailing arms
Source Engineering Inc | Custom RV Chassis | Eugene, OR
My daughter had to have a set shipped to Fairbanks, Alaska along with the 4 Bag Ride Enhancement Kit, shipping and install around $7000. My be less money in the lower 48, but I would pass if they have not been replaced with Source Engineering arms. If replace back in the day at Monaco, they may still crack.

Also check the aluminum radiator where the upper radiator hose neck attaches to the radiator itself. known to crack and nearly impossible to repair.

I have owned a 2005 Monaco Cayman PDQ36 for 4 years and have been very happy with it. As mentioned, the trailing arms need replaced with Source Engineering arms and I recommend the REK. The rollers on the back slides were wearing in the bottom of the slides and needed an aluminum strip attached to ride on. The rollers under the bed were wearing on the bed frame and needed a piece of aluminum to ride on. Those are relatively easy and inexpensive fixes. I replaced the turbo on the engine. Other than that, no issues you wouldn't expect from a 10 year old coach. I would recommend having the engine inspected and diagnosed by a Cummins dealer prior to purchase.

When you test drive it, get on the freeway and take it for several miles and pay attention to the steering. If it has ( and probably does) the SHEPPARD STEERING GEAR BOX you may be in for some interesting driving. Some of us have replaced the Sheppard box with a TRW box that helps. It cost me about $800.00 doing the exchange myself.

Bought our 38 SBD new 12/09 and got the Source trailing arms and ride enhancement kit installed. We absolutely loved the SBD floorpan for storage and having just 2 slides. But it is 2000 lbs heavier on passenger rear than driver rear, and without a four corner weighing you won't know for sure=tires possibly under inflated. We upped the OEM 255 tires to 295 and it really made the ride 'right'. Trailing arms and REK just made the coach safe--but the maxed out psi oem tires rode about like solid rubber ones--feel every pebble. Private message me for more info if you like. If this coach doesn't have the Source arms and REK, I would pass. Even if it does, there are lots of used Monacos in the Diplomat and above with much better 8 airbag/shock configuration that I personally would be looking at in a used coach. Good luck.
