Looking for an RV for the family...

Saw this on RV Trader.

2000 Holiday Rambler Navigator 43 PBD, Anaheim CA - - RVtrader.com

Pending any inspection, is there anything to watch out for on this time-frame RV? The description has some info, but not a lot. But it's also only a couple hours away (Everything in Los Angeles is a couple hours away, even if its 2 blocks away). It seems to be in good enough shape for a visit.

Navigator is the top of the line Holiday Rambler. This is a nice coach with all the bells and whistles.

Things to look at
  • Maintenance records, most important is engine, transmission, and generator. Looking for frequent (annual) oil changes on engine and generator. Also should have at least 2 services on transmission.
  • If maintenance has been kept up consider getting oil samples and testing.
  • Look at DOT date code on tires, rule of thumb is to replace at 7 years. Date code is a 4 digit code first two are the number week in the year and last two digits are year. 2510 means 25th week of 2010. If tires are 5 years old you will plan on spending ~$4500 for new tires 2 years.
  • Look for any signs of water leaks, stains in the ceilings, soft spots in the floor.
  • Check all appliances and components to make sure they work.
  • Test the generator, put it under a full load by running all 3 AC units and the water heater, this will be about 55 amps.
This is an older coach so you can expect problems but with good inspection you can mitigate the risk in the future.

Good Luck

Consider bringing a change of some old work cloths and crawl around under it with a flash light. Look for any signs of leaks or damage. Don't be shy. Ask a ton of questions. When we bought ours (2 months ago) it took almost a whole day before we even made an offer. My wife inspected the inside while I was outside on top and underneath.

After looking at the pics they seem nice but pics can be deceiving. That being said I think their asking price is a little high but then again I don't live in California...lol. Best of luck to ya.

New find

If you feel comfortable doing the inspection thats great,if not it is money well spent to pay a pro to do the inspection. You can't always believe the seller. A guy here in town bought a used rv and took it in for service only to find out by the repair shop it was covered in black mold and really not recommended to be used.

I will pay for a professional inspection. I can touch and listen just like the next guy, but I just don't have enough experience to know what I am listening to or looking for, outside the blatantly obvious.

I was more looking for info on the specific chassis and drivetrain. Were there any outstanding issues that were common to the year. Overloaded axles or structural issues.

Add states 500 Cummins, This is the ISM correct? The only brochure available from HR is as far back as 2001, which shows the ISM. People talk about the Ugly Fix, but that it only applies to EGR engines. This is pre-EGR yes?

*Update*
I was gonna go see that Navigator this weekend but the family veto'd the coach saying its too long and we can't store it at the house. Plus, being in CA, no one but me wanted to bother with getting a Class B non-commercial license for it. :(

Coach looks nice but only has one slide so bed is situated for and aft. Way too much money.

The ad states 2 slides, the one with the kitchen on drivers side, and on pic 11 you can tell the bed is facing east west in the bedroom and the slide is on the headboard (drivers side). But as I stated, I got veto'd out of consideration for this coach
