Magnum Energy ME2012 Inverter/Charger

First symptom of something wrong was the monitor inside was dark. Two separate techs from two different companies diagnosed as defective inverter. So I bought a new one and had it installed and still no monitor. Tech now says monitor is bad so I bought a new one and still dark. Later found out that mice had been chewing wiring. So I have think 40 pound chuck of metal that I am not sure is bad. It seems like such a waste to throw away. What does one do with these things?

Sounds like you may have replaced a good working inverter, I would have it checked out and if good save it.

I hope you didn't replace both units just because of a Communication cable. You'd have to test the unit, you can clamp two bolts in the cable clamps can use a pair of jumper cables. If you have not yet installed the new Communication cable you can use that to test Communications side and the old controller. You can chop up an old extension cord to test the charge side and output . I see a lot of these for sale on Facebook Marketplace mostly older units. I've kept an eye out for a newer Magnum the ones are price Fair go quick

Mail it to me! I've been thinking of replacing my 20 year old one but it's still working making it hard for me to justify getting modern!

There is a Magnum Service Center in Burlington, NC. I would take/ship it there and have it checked. If good, you can keep it or sell it.

Sorry. Next time use an RJ11 phone cord with one end reversed to connect the remote directly to the inverter. Two screws to remove the remote. Then just carry it out to the basement and plug it in.

I updated our inverter and sold the old inverter and remote on Craig's List. They are popular for folks installing solar chargers and battery systems.

Agreed. I could be convinced to take a chance on it though

You do not need the remote to do some bench testing. But if you have one that is even better but you would need to make a cable as suggested. Cheap crimpers and a handfull of connectors are easy to come by.

The inverter will work without the remote but you don't have all the bells and whistles.

My extended warrantly allowed me to change mine myself so I was kind of lucky. I gave them proof of purchase of the replacement and they paid most of the invoice.

A cut off cord for shoreline power and a small lawn tractor battery was all I used.

I am a certified electronic tech and very comfortable doing things like this so if you take on the task be sure to wear safety goggles etc of course.

I found the burned wire inside and repaired it easily. Plugged the temporary cord in and fired it right up. Disconnected the cord after checking the battery was being charged and it went into inverting mode with a push of a button as I recall. I have plenty of documentation on the inverter if you need.

Once I was sure it was ok I put it on Craigs list. Lots of boat and RV's in central Florida. A competent man I assured would get his money back if not happy met me and I received $250-300 for it. I did deliver it to him.

In any case, even a defective one can find a home to a geek like me if the price is right.

So don't just toss it. Could be a very simple problem inside of it.

In my PC build scrap I had tons of phone cables you could just cut flip and splice twist the wires and tape ,save a some bucks to make just a test cord if your a horder like me and have one laying around.
