2001 Dynasty
I have had a 2001 Dynasty 38’ single rear axel for over 10 years and love it. With Monaco or HR, I don’t think I would go past about 2005 to avoid a decline in quality as they started having financial problems and emission standards changed. A few years ago I had an age related radiator problem but all in all have had far less issues than had I bought new. Mine has an Aqua Hot which provides quite heat and we lived in the coach one winter when temps got down to 9 below a couple of nights. Double pane windows really helped.

Holiday Rambler and Monaco
When we bought our Holiday Rambler and when we had to have it “bought back” under the Lemon Law it was Monaco who bought it back from us, the check came from Monaco. Monaco made Holiday Rambler motor homes at that time (2008) but that was before they went out of business and then came back into business so I don’t know if that is how it is now.
All I can say is thank goodness for the excellent Lemon Law of California.

I have owned several RV's from 5th wheels to 42 Foot H.R. Scepter. I surly hope that they have improved. I will say they were on the verge of bankruptcy when I bought mine, bout it was problematice from day one and it was problematic 6 years later when I traded it in for a Tiffin. I think there are other brands that I would look at before a HR

Early - Mid 2000's is about the best we can justify.
And then models in our price / dimension range . . . Cayman (Neptune), Knight (Ambassador) and ? (Endeavor). I listed in increasing weight / HP which seems to correlate to how nice they are.
Can someone help describe the general make & model differences?
Yes, I've looked at brochures for all of them and picking out the details is . . . very detailed. Sorta like not seeing the forest because all the trees are in the way. But gotta thank the manufacturers for their excellent archives.
We're looking for something fairly easy to drive (compared to an F53 gasser in a 20 mph headwind), quiet HVAC (big points for heat pump), decent temperature insulation and somewhat immune from outside noises. We'll boondock in cow pastures, glamp some State parks and sometimes sit in an RV park.
It seems the Cayman / Neptune doesn't offer all that, but the Endeavor covers all the bases at the cost of a fuel chomping Cummins ISC engine.
We know many state parks have a 35 ft limit . . . . forget that! We don't want to limit our choices to 34 ft coaches. 36 or 38 seem to be a good sizes.
And what's with the 6 digit # on HR Neptune front and rear caps?
Ok, I'm rambling . . .
Looking forward to hearing some comments, and thank you in advance.
Best,
- bob

We have a 2004 HR Scepter (40 PBDD). As another post noted, having the side mount radiator makes basic maintenance much easier. There have only been a few repairs required that I could not handle. I've done a lot of upgrades, such as replacing the tube TVs with flat HD TVs, replacing the audio system, replacing the carpet with laminate, re-upholstering the captain's chairs (and adding seat heaters), and replacing the bedding with a sleep number bed.
I also agree with other posters about how noisy the HVAC and heat pumps are. The other thing that I don't like about the HVAC system is the two speed fan.
Only remaining gripes are that a larger shower would be nice, and the pantry can only be accessed when the slide is out. I will probably change the pantry so that it is accessible from the hallway with the slide "in."

You absolutely must use jack stand if you get under the beast to chase those leaks.
The coach can drop like a rock and for reasons you would not understand or believe unless you have had one before.
The transmission computer communicates with the jacks mechanism and can trigger an emergency retract. Water damage to the transmission controller can cause the same issue.
So stay alive and get jack stands under it when you are under it.

Class A diesel pusher weighs 35,000 pounds+, you should keep it on pavement and rock, hard florida ground in RV parks is also ok, I personally would not take it off road, it will sink get stuck and you’ll have a $5,000 tow bill in addition to the damage they will do to the coach. “Boondock in cow pastures”

Love our Holiday Ramber
We bought our 2003 Endeavor 6 years ago with only 20,000 miles on it. We now have 70,000 miles on it. I have always compared ours to the Monaco in the era and the interiors are very similar. Differences I have found was the generator pulled out on the Monaco and the storage areas also puled out. Best upgrade I made was a residential frigerator (works great), new air conditioners, upgraded the flooring, and flat screen tv's. Love it and running strong

The Knight uses a trailing arm system, which in the early years was prone to failure. Here is a link show which model & year were affected Source Engineering Inc | Custom RV Chassis | Eugene, OR
There was a recall for this issue but some RV's did not have this done since it was up to the owner to make an effort to get it done. Every so often there is a report of a trailing arm failure, which usually leaves the coach stranded. So if you do consider a coach that is on the list make sure the trailing arms have been replaced.
Also, starting in ~2006 emission controls were installed on engines. Pretty much as these systems were installed they inherently had problems, especially new versions of different controls. Even now the newest diesel engines use DEF, and if you do enough reading you'll see posts from people having problems with all the different emission controls, some more then others.
I would suggest you spend time looking at the different rigs. As you work your way up the ladder the quality and amenities improve quite a bit. You can buy a quality used rig for a fraction of what it costs new. You can get a used rig that still has a lot of life left in it.

Monaco,Holiday Rambler
This is our third season in our 2004 HR Endeavor 40 DP. There have been some problems with but they were all about normal from my conversations with other owners. There was some “catch up” items left over from the previous owners lack of care.
After catching up on that we did some improvements to our unit. I have noticed that the fuel mileage has steadily gotten better since we have had it. We have the 8.3 Cummins 330 hp ISC engine. It is getting over 10 MPG towing a 8500 lb 20 ft enclosed trailer. I was thinking about getting the engine turned up powerwise but almost everyone that hears this says if it’s getting the mileage like this “don’t touch it”
We really like ours, I think you will too!

I’m on my sixth Class A, third diesel. My daughter found a 2006 Diplomat PAQ, has 256 inch wheelbase chassis. Soon to own it five years, this is by far the best coach on the road in my opinion, if you drive 62mph, you will get 9-10 mpg from a 400hp engine. Drive 70, get 7mpg. Monaco bought up hundreds of engines to build non DEF units well past 2006.
Find one of these!
I have spent money on this coach, but for tires, batteries, oil changes, remove 3M mask and paint front cap, one new a/c (so far). This unit was one owner, well cares for, perfect paint, 4-slides and is not for sale as long as I’m breathing. If you want joy in RVing, buy one of these. My previous coach was a Dutch Star, and while it was a great motorhome, there is no comparison for power, ride, handling.

Monaco vs Holiday Rambler
Everyone has given great advice but one needs to read as many reviews as you can stand to figure out which one is for you. We were ready to make a deal on a 2012 Holiday Rambler until I started reading reviews. Turns out the people making HR after the 08 crash are not the same company and the motorhomes are anything but the old quality. Everyone we know with an older, pre-2008 Monaco are happy with their coach. Just Sayin.....
Good Luck

Boy would I like that mileage. I get about 6.6 mpg pulling 6000# Expedition at 65 mph. Same engine.

If you're driving in hilly country, for example, the downhills never make up for the uphills. the 6000lb toad may be affecting your mpg, but not to the tune of anything like 3. Hopefully others with same engine& model will chime on on this.
Depending on driving patterns, headwinds and hills, 6 to 8 mpg is not out of the question. Thera are extremes, e.g flat roads, luck of taking a trip where there's a steady tailwind, and odometers which are off :-)
