What you describe sounds like the coolant filter. usually white and about 3" in diameter. If it's the coolant filter it is there to filter the coolant in the radiator. It also has a corrosion preventative inside the filter. You should learn how to test the coolant for nitrides, Ph, etc. so that you'll know when to add dsc

Thanks, that is what I needed to know. Do you know how often this coolant filter should be changed?

I think I read in my cummins manual that it should be changed at every oil change.

Coolant filter.
You can get them with various amounts of DCA in them to replenish the anticavitation chemicals that are required. DCA is the name of the chemical that Cummins uses to replenish the SCA's in their engines. (SCA = Supplemental Cooling Additive)
If you have never checked the DCA levels you may find out what an engine rebuild costs.
Then again, maybe the previous owner replaced the coolant with "lifetime" coolant that doesn't require the DCA to be checked and you'll luck out.

You can get coolant test strips for diesels from Cummins or any auto parts store that sells truck parts. Easy to test and it will tell you what additives you need, if any.

I have Final Charge, too. Don't we still need to change the filter?

The only time you need the "extender" is for "off road usage". Final Charge is good for three hundred thousand miles. The filter used is a "blank" filter and it needs to be changed according to the filter mfg.
This is according to the website.

Don't know if you are going to change the filter yourself, but, if you do, be aware that there is a shutoff valve on the filter receiver that will need to be turned from full vertical to full horizontal prior to filter change. That valve is designed to prevent coolant loss from the engine during filter change. After changing the filter, of course, the valve will need to be turned back to full vertical and the amount of coolant in the old filter will need to be replenished. By the way, according to Cummins, the coolant pressure cap should be removed prior to changing the filter to relieve system pressure.
