Newbie. ..Tag axle
Hi all,
New to the forums and Rv..ing.
So I have a 2004 Navigator and when I try and raise the Tag Axle the air bags dump on the Tag axle, but the air chambers don't seem to be getting air to raise the axle. I have what seems to be 3 solenoids by the air regular on the back road side. There also seems to be some solenoids on the curbside frame rail by the ECM. Which ones do what? And best method for testing? Thanks

Mine did a similar thing.
Problem was the tag lift chambers had a bad rubber seal. This let ALL the air out of the rear air bags.
Check the lift chamber which is behind the tag axle on each side. Have someone push the tag button. The canister should push the tag lift bar and raise the axle.
If no push motion, check for bad seals.
New cans are only about $65 each

New diaphragms = $5.00 each.
Easy to change if needed.

And a lot easier to change. Should be able to hear the air leaking if this is your problem.

Thanks for all the replys, I will try and check them this weekend. Topman do you have a part# for the diaphragms or a source.

I think they are universal. 2 different sizes though.
Just measure yours.

Once you determine the rubber diaphragm is bad, remove the clamp that holds the 2 half’s together and the size will stamped on it. A NAPA store should be able to get it. It may be a size 30 and there is a small return spring inside that is easy to compress...NOT like brake dual chambers that I would not recommend taking apart.
I used to raise my tag but between no noticeable difference in tire wear and our tires age out before we wear them out, not sure I’d worry about it not raising.
My “new” rig is on the heavy side with 22K on the drive and 7K on the tag...raising would put 29K on the drive which is why many of the new DPs have steerable tags that do not overload the drive axle.

Can't help with the tag axle but noticed you are kinda new on IRV2 and wanted to say hello! Have fun and keep her between the ditches!
Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!

Once again I would like to say Thanks for all the Replys. So I could not hear it...but I felt air leaking around the road side air chamber. Getting Old....So took a few pictures. It was ever easy to fix. Under 30 minutes with hand tools alone. 15 minutes with air tools. Tools needed were 15/16 deep well socket. 9/16 deep well socket. Long handle 1/2 Rachet . Loosing the 2 bolts holding down the air chamber. Then Remove the bolt holding the the Rod to the lifting arm. Continue to remove the 2 bolt securing the air chamber to the frame. Remove the air line. Put chamber out. Set it down and remove the 2 band bolts. Remove bands. Open up the top and remove the diaphragm. Push rod down and put a vice grip holding the spring down. Insert new diaphragm. Replace top . Place bands around new diaphragm....watch orientation. ..the diaphragm has 2 taps that should align with the gap in the band. Tighten band while tapping band to set evenly. Remove vice grips .Secure back to frame rail but leave loose. Put bolt through Rod and lifting arm. Then tight all bolts. Here was my problem..diaphragm was not installed correctly. I believe they didn't compress the spring before tighten the band. You must compress the spring before are diaphragm will not seat correctly. This is a very easy job 30 Minutes Max. It's a type 30 air chamber with a 3" stroke. As Topman said very common part and cheap. Tag fixed. Thanks Guys

Glad you found the problem. Thanks for posting the inexpensive solution and that it is a #30 diaphragm.

Usually less than an inch. They just barely clear the ground enough to take the weight off and make it easier to make tight turns.
