No engine brake, headed toward the Rockies

Hi all,

I just had the mh in a shop for body work and when I started to drive it away, it had a "warning" light on which they had neglected to tell me about. After cleaning/ tightening connections associated with the sensors the warning cleared.

With assortment of other problems related with not having the coach for three months due to a blowout, we ended up late getting on the road so I continued on without having an engine brake. I'm guessing/hoping that when they were going over the wiring they may have pulled a connection off for the engine brake. I'm currently in Moab, UT and crawling down these hills without an engine brake is getting tiresome.

The connection at the pedal is fine, does anyone know where I could trace the wiring from there to make sure all connections are secure?

Thanks so much,

Please stop and get Jake fixed. Going down some of Colorado s famous grades is iffy without it. you have a heavy coach like mine. If it gets away from you it will take off like a rocket

If it was your rt side that was damaged, might be as simple as looking under the Jake switch plate to find a loose wire.

I wouldn't even think of going into the mountains without an exhaust brake!

You need to get it into a heavy diesel shop before you put it on any grade steeper than 2 degrees. Not just your life depends on it.

How did we get down the hills before the Jake/Pac Brake?

I can see how truckers with standard transmissions handle it, but I wouldn't want to try it with an auto tranny!

Steve/Keri:

You are gonna want that engine brake in Colorado, for sure (even on the small hills). If you are coming into the state on the east side, call Dave Woverton at 303.288.0910 when you get to the Denver area. Works only on busses and RVs - a quality "independent" shop. He's saved my butt a couple times.

Sorry, I don't know any shops on the west side of the state.

FYI, Best of Luck!

The difference would be experience. Back in those days the runaway lanes were used quite frequently.

Just made that trip Sunday. I wouldn't do those hills without the exhaust brake, no way no how.

Passed a few truck stops that had 24hour service, I would start by looking into something like that.

Good luck!

My exhaust break quit and it was the switch that was bad. I sprayed contact
cleaner into the micro switch and it started working again. I will buy a new
micro switch one of these days.

Steve ,

Surely you have gotten the drift , DON'T DO IT .

You don't say if you have driven in the rockies before
If you haven't then you should know there's passes that
will make your ass pinch a hole in your leather seats .
Not saying it can't be done but I wouldn't do it ,
not without an engine or exhaust brake .

Last yr on Wolf Creek Pass I saw what looked like a new
Prevost up in a run away truck lane .
He was trying to back out of gravel about a foot deep .
