The dipstick on our 400 HP ISL has a notch on the solid metal portion of the dipstick. I initially thought this was the high water mark for a full crankcase. Is this correct? When I had the oil changed I asked them to put in 28 qts of oil and not rely on the dipstick. The result was that the oil level on the dipstick was almost exactly on the dipstick full mark and not at the notch which makes me think the notch may not be a calibration mark. Is the notch supposed to be a calibration mark for a dull crankcase or not?

I have used a notch when I calibrate an engine. I was a Tec. and the first oil change we did that. Maybe your dealer?

Mark....You've got me wondering.....My coach is right on the full mark with 24 quarts of oil including a filter change. My manual says 20 qts low, 24 qts full and 28 qts with a filter. The filter only holds two qts.

I've been running mine at 24 qts since the first oil change. The oil has always been right on the full mark.

I have the notch on mine, but it's another 2"-3" above the full mark. Awaiting a reply from an email I sent to Cummins.

I went ahead and called Monaco Tech Support and there is no significance to the notch on the flat metal tip of the dipstick. It is not a calibration point for oil in the system.
