Oil Level

My dip stick shows half way between full and add. I know on an car the add line means 1 quart low but how much does it mean on a 5.9 ISB. I don't want to over fill it.

Pour a quart in and see what it does to the level. In my ISC it was a gallon from add to full. Not sure with my present ISX though as it has an 8 gallon reservoir and built in pump to add oil, just push a button.

Many rigs tend to like running a bit lower than "full" on the dip stick. I have run my ISL400 for years between the half-full and add marks on the operating range on the stick. That range is about 2 qrts--or about 4 qrts for the full ops range. This approach limits the amount of oil expended out the "slobber" tube on my 2002 era Cummins engine.

Pretty sure I recall reading somewhere that the add mark means a gallon needed on my ISC.

Add 1/2 quart and see how much it changes. It's easier to add than it is to remove.

If you are reading between the full mark and the add mark, then you are good to go, just leave it alone. The main objective is to keep the oil level between the full and add lines for all motors.
