Onan 10K HDKCA Code 13

FYI... for future searchers.

After months of messing with an intermittent start/run problem on our 10k diesel genset it finally failed completely. A good thing because intermittents are a bear to troubleshoot.

In any case this may save you some time, frustration and $$$$$.

The Code 13 trouble tree points to transformer $100, control board $660, rotor $1100, stator $1300, after low readings.

I was lucky in stopping at Cummins Power South in Ocala, FL where Supervisor Mike Foley tried the board for free...no fix. Tech Mike Too ran all the numbers per the trouble tree and either rotor or stator was indicated. They ordered both just in case. During the teardown I asked Tech Mike to replace brushes while in there.

AH HAH!!!! Brushes were at the marginal limit but one was broken/cracked and thus created the intermittent no start. NOWHERE in the Code 13 trouble tree.

SOOOOO you might try brushes first $14 Yea!!! That and 2.5 hours labor which was way less than they spent on it, because of following the book, and partial teardown. RESULT the gen is up and running.

Hope someone else finds this and saves themselves a LOT of time and money.

Symptoms...gen diesel motor starts, but shuts down after about 20 seconds. Gives a shutdown Code 13.

BTW this was at 3100 hours of use so if you are getting there change the brushes!!! However a cracked brush could cause this intermittently at any number of hours. I think mine started around 2500 hours or so.
