The Camelot and Sceptor are nearly identical. Several of the Camelot and Sceptor owners have up sized from the 295/80R to the 315/80R on the steer axle. This thread was not started to rehash the pro's and con's. The first Michelin dealer I approached also advised against changing sizes. He was concerned about possible liability on his part and stated he would have to note on the receipt that I had insisted in the size change.

In today's world, I get it. He is trying to protect his business, but he will probably not get my business.

I have researched my alternatives and it makes good sense to me to upsize. I am not sure how long ago you checked into the tire prices, but today's FMCA prices are:
295/80 = $586.18 plus $52.83 FET
315/80 = $638.53 plus $40.92 FET

I was quoted $952.82 for the 315/80 without FMCA discount.

I do appreciate your input, but I think my mind is made up. My only remaining concern was that placing the 315/80 on the 8.25 inch rim may cause the tire to pucker and wear on the edges. Based on the input so far that does not seem to be an issue.

I reversed the prices in my previous statement. The 315/80 is the less expensive tire. Sorry!

Your original post did NOT mention about using the larger tires JUST for the steer position so I assumed that you were looking at using the larger tires in all positions.

Many people with larger heavier coaches have up-sized their steer tires especially members of the Monacoers forum. It allows them to lower their psi but carry the same weight.

By installing them on the narrower wheel, it simply de-rates the tire by a small percentage.

Some have attempted to up-size all around but have difficulty with the spacing of the dual tires or clearance with the wheel well.

Tireman9 has a blog and is an iRV2.com member with lots of knowledge and experience with tires and wheels. If interested, you could give him a shout.

BTW, that's a great price for the 315 tire. Usually they are more than the 295's. They must have excess stock to turn over.

Also, I would not accept any tire with a date code of more than 3 months. Why would I want to pay for an OLD new tire.

Junction City is also were I purchased the 315s and they questioned me on upsizing and I told them that's what I wanted. They then commented that they've done it for a number of customers. As mentioned previously the 315s are cheaper and there is no sales tax in Oregon. I saved enough to cover my trip to Coos Bay to play with the Quads in the sand.

There's a fine line between guts and stupidity,,, I think I lean towards stupidity,,,,

I am just in the process of changing them. The hard part is they still look so good.

Have they come that far?? This thing rides pretty good now,, LOL

I did talk with a long haul guy the other day and asked him "are Michelins still the tire of choice?" He quickly relied, "absolutely"

So I guess there IS something to be said about the quality of Michelin Tires!

Definitely not something that I would recommend or do but it certainly does contradict what has been given to RVer's for maximum time limit (age) on tires.

Michelin recommends that they should last at last 10 years with professionally trained tire inspection performed yearly after 6 years or so.

My tires were only 8 years old when I replaced them, and when driving home after the install, I sat back and thought I traded it in on a new Coach, the ride was completely different, think of a o-ring that has sat around for 9-17 years, pick it up and twist it around, might of broke it.....hard.......now do this to a new o-ring....
Michelins would also be my choice, look next time at what is on a tour bus when you see one .........ton of miles everyday, Steer tires on "most all" semi's......
The first thing you are going to say to yourself........should of done this a long time ago........safe travels to ya.......

Why stop at 315s when you can have the Michelin large tire and rim that cement trucks have for steering? deSanford
