Plastic box next to propane tank???
What is this next to my propane tank? 1995 holiday rambler imperial. Switch says Lp propane but my tank is right beside it. Seems like a waste of space. Sorry pic is upside down.

Because your propane service valve is not accessible , filling of the tank requires shutting off supply to the coach; BY LAW ; the coach builder installed an electric solenoid to turn off the supply hence the switch .
Why it's mounted where it is , is anybody's guess .

Yep, Skip426 is correct about the switch.
Still, why the space next to the tank is blocked off is not clear. Is that area completely boxed in or is it open underneath and/or on the sides? Could there be a holding tank behind that cover?

It is completely boxed in. Also spray foamed underneath.
As far as the Lp switches I already have a switch on the inside and a valve next to the tank for shut offs. 🤷🏻*♂️ Guess it’s a third one?

On mine, if you take the cover off, you will find the piping from your toilet and access to your black and grey tanks.

I think veraken has answered the question about the box.
As far as the interior switch, that is a standard installation. Both switches have to be ON for gas to flow through the system. Typical usage is the outside switch is always left ON. Inside, the switch is used to open or shut the gas flow when the operator wishes. The handle or knob on the tank is also always OPEN if gas is to be used as the electric solenoids replace the ON/OFF function of the manual valve. The solenoids are there because the tank location makes access to the manual valve difficult or risky.
When the tank is to be filled, the service person uses the outside switch to shut the gas valve, and fills the tank. If he fails to turn it back ON after filling, your inside switch will not activate gas flow.
