Relationship between ATC and Engine Brake systems

I have a 2007 Monaco Dynasty Emperor IV with Cummins ISL 400. Normally I travel with the ATC system, Engine Brake, and Cruise Control in the off position. Most of our trips since we bought the coach in the fall of 2016 have been on fairly level terrain. Twice I have engaged the engine brake in either low or high mode and the ATC light comes on even though the road surface was dry and just rolling terrain. The ATC light doesn't come on immediately, usually just a few minutes after turning on the JAKE brake. The ATC light illuminates on dash and the light behind the ATC switch slowly flashes on and off. In both instances, I don't believe the engine brake ever activates so I don't understand why the light comes on, without any slick surface and/or engine brake activation. Has anyone encountered this situation or knows what is actually causing the issue.

FYI: I don't have a fuel filter issue...changed every filter in this coach this spring and the coach runs great with awesome power and reasonable fuel mileage. I don't lose any power or performance when the ATC light comes on. I'm not sure if there is any ABS sensor issues but I don't get any ABS lights or braking problems.

Any suggestions are appreciated. Joe H.

Hi Joe,

I have a 2007 Dynasty Palace III and my ATC light comes on and off at wierd times also. Only had it for 5 months, but we were in a CG most of that time. I'm not worried about it, but would like to know the reason.

Mine light comes on a odd time, like if I have the tag lifted and hit the brakes. But it goes out in a short time. Guess it's sensing the difference between brakes locking the tag wheels and the drive wheels turning.

ATC (Automatic Traction Control) - Our light does likewise. Must be generic to the design??? The ONLY time ATC would truly come into play for you is if you are trying to move the coach or drive it on a VERY slick surface. We had ours come into play a couple of years ago when we stopped in deep snow on a shallow incline and tried to travel forward. That's the ONLY time it's ever been a factor. We try not to find ourselves in that kind of a driving situation.

CRUISE - If your coach is like ours, the cruise control will not operate when the engine brake is switched into the ON (Enabled) position. For that reason, we leave the engine brake switch in the OFF position once established on the highway and using the cruise control. Touching the service brake pedal or turning on the engine brake switch will immediately cancel the cruise control. Not sure why you don't use yours, but some folks do choose not to. Also, you know that you use your cruise function to enable fast-idle on start-up or shut-down.

ENGINE BRAKE - If you aren't getting use from your engine brake, you are going to hugely impact your brake wear, and you are going to have significantly increased stopping distances. And, you can quickly get into a seriously dangerous situation if you find yourself on a long and somewhat steep downhill grade. Check that out! Find out of it is working, and if it isn't, get it fixed!

Stay with your learning curve on this until you become comfortable with how the engine brake system and the cruise control systems function. Don't worry too much about the ATC as unless you like winter weather driving, it should never come into play. These coaches are much too heavy to be able to "spin" their drive tires on anything less than snow or ice.

Ours does the same (2004 Camelot) along with the ABS light. Mostly when driving in the rain. It usually goes off when it dries out.

ATC in off? Why? Are you saying the ATC light illuminates when it is turned off?

I just leave the switch alone, never considered turning it off.

I always leave my ATC off also. We are FT and we aren't going anywhere within 200 miles of snow/ice 😀

With it always off, the ATC comes on periodically quite often. Our car also has an ATC and never turn it on either. What I'm curious about is, if it comes on by itself or when it thinks it's needed, why even put a switch on it?

I wandered out to the coach, mine does not have an off position, it is a spring loaded switch which is always activated.

Are yours different?
