Replacing Original Starter on Cummins 600

Interested in hearing from anyone who has replaced the original Delco starter on a Cummins 600 ISX engine with a Denso starter. Several blogs rant and rave about the change and my original Delco starter just died on my 07 Signature so will be buying a new starter.

Doug if your starter just died and you have to replace it then really the only starter to use is the Denso gear reduction starter. I know several RVers that have replaced theirs on both Detroit motors and the Cummins ISX motors and they all say that the motors start faster especially in cold weather.

Hi Doug,

I was having starting problems and so I ordered the OE Denso R5 Series Starter for my motorhome's engine which is a Cummins ISX 525 HP; however, it did not work out because it was the wrong starter even though the description matched perfectly for my intended application.

I had installed a DelcoRemy Heavy Duty Gear Reduction Starter and am pleased so far with its performance. The engine starts right up with no hesitation or slow starting as before. In my particular case, I learned that the starter solenoid was bypassed and was probably bad.

Zackman, the Denso part number that fits the Cummins ISX, the Cummins ISM-500 and the Detroit Series 60 is Denso 428000-4430. I know that this part number fits those motors. What was the part number that you had that didn't work?

Hi Mike,

That part number was 428000-4440 which explains now why it was the incorrect starter.

Interesting. I also understand the new Delco gear reduction starters are working well but the craftsmanship of the Denso far exceeds it but a big price difference.

Mike, I was not aware of a Delco gear-reduction starter. Did you mean the Denso is MORE or LESS expensive than the Delco? $350 (delivered) for the Denso seemed reasonable.

I've looked up that part number several times and it just shows that it fits up to the 2006 and ours is a 2008 or 2009 so I haven't ordered one.

Vanwill I don't know about your particular application but for the Cummins ISX and the Detroit motors the Delco 8200308 gear reduction starter is about $50 cheaper.

I had my starter replaced with the Denso 428000-4440. According to the cross reference that part number fits the ISX, don't know about the 4430. It works fantastic, I would highly recommend changing out yours to one of these. Bought it on Amazon for $324.95 free shipping. Randy

Zackman, I just double checked that part number and it shows the 4440 to be the correct one for your ISX like mine, the 4430 shows to be for certain year M11 and certain year Detroits but no mention of the ISX. I can assure you that the 4440 is the right one and is starting my ISX just fine.

Looking at the pictures as I have attached below it appears that the 4430 is designed to mount with the solenoid on top and the 4440 with the solenoid on the bottom

Doug, I replaced the oem delco 39MT_HD with Denso 428000-4440 last fall, it is a direct replacement, only had to reroute and modify one wire.
This is the best change I've ever made on my Sig. You'll love the fast start EVERY time.
My Delco didn't fail, it just wouldn't turn over fast enough to crank about 80% of the time. Anybody want a used Delco?

Thanks for the clarification Mike, the guy I purchased from didn't show what you did, so I just went by application. The shop that installed mine didn't say anything about the solenoid being in a different location ( top or bottom). Best money I've spent cuz she really spins over now.
