Roaming satellite replacement.
I still have the old winneguard auto satellite on my roof, I am told the technology is far too old for today. I am looking for a good replacement so my family can watch tv going down the road. Also the pay as you go monthly sounds interesting. Is there a DVD option as well? Only two tv's in my rv.
Anyone done a good replacement and happy with the products and service?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Rick

I found several options but don't know what works best. Hoping someone with experience could save me some hassle and money by not buying junk first.

I bought and love the Traveler 1000; however it doesn't work in motion like you seem to want. The good thing about the 1000 is the dish is the same size as my home dish so I get great reception. I also take my boxes from home. I used to take the one with the DVR....it doesn't do well on the road. Dish has had to replace it twice under their equipment warranty program. Now I just bring two of the solid state boxes and can watch two different channels.

By AUTO satellite, do you mean it will auto track the satellite? The reason I ask is because you said the technology was to old. I have a new Winegard Traveler which is AUTO track to satellite. For what I paid for it, I hope it's not obsolete. I will be really upset if it's OLD.

I've had three in motion satellite systems. The last one (KVH) was so much trouble and so expensive to update and repair, I'm done with them. They only receive 1 satellite at a time and if you select a new channel that requires a different satellite, you have to wait while it searches and locks the new satellite. Then if you switch the channel back, you have to wait again. They are also very sensitive and if your jacks settle or move, you will lose the signal. Just not good.
I'm switching to a Winegard Traveler. It is not in motion, but it receives multiple satellites simultaneously just like a home dish. It locks on very quickly when parked and you can switch channels almost instantaneously.
The kids will just have to watch DVDs when in motion.

IMHO, kids are spoiled these days. I'm sure if I was a kid, and had the option to watch TV or a DVD, I would to.
I like to watch the Traveler search and find the 3 satellites, pretty cool.

For those who still have SD only Directv. This may influence your purchase. I have had Wineguard Trav'ler for three years with only one bad cable issue.
Solid Signal Blog - THE END IS COMING: DIRECTV announces end of SD service

I was in your shoes 6 months ago with an original dish on my 2005. There is a super knowledgeable technician in North Houston that really knows his stuff. When I spoke to him on the phone he said 50/50 shot that I may need a new setup or he may be able to reprogram the unit. When he came out he WAS able to program the system properly for Direct TV (which it supposedly never was setup properly) and now I have no problems at all. With that said the changes coming in the next few years will probably still force me to upgrade my system. I say all this because if you don't want to pony up for a new system and you can find the right technician you can save yourself a bunch of cash. Good luck.

Rick ,
The most often used term is " in motion satellite " which we still use
in our coach .
We have direct tv and it is old standard def but we like the in motion .
If you didn't read the link about Direct tv doing away with the one satellite
that we still use then that should help you make your decision .
It's been said that the satellite is running out of fuel and before it does
they will need to send it down to burn it up .
That is supposed to occur sometime in 2019 , I'll be forced to change then .
Dish may not have that looming in their future , I don't know , but be careful
before spending a lot of money on in motion .
The future seems to be in the Winegard Traveler or similar product , those
will up date you to HD but no in motion .
People are beginning to test using Direct tv streaming from their phone
It will get you in motion if you can stay connected to the towers .
Good luck
Ray
