RVA Jack Springs

I am changing the springs on my rear jacks and found the bushings bad on one side. I have the old springs off and new bushings ordered. I can't see how I will get the new springs on there. I know the clothespin trick and used that to get the old ones off but there just isn't any room up in there. Should I be doing this with the jacks removed?

if you got the old ones off, why isn't there enough room to get them back on?
Are new springs thicker?
You should be able install in the same way (same trick). What has changed?

That seems logical but when you've been wrestling with it all day it seems harder than it may actually be

Update :

Putting the new springs on was easier than taking them off actually. Instead of clothespins I used 25 1/8 inch thick washers per spring and it was pretty easy. The new springs fixed up one jack but unfortunately the jack that I had rebuilt still won't retract all the way without help. I guess I'll have to take it back off and back to the shop :(
