shower tile

I would like to take the plastic shower surround out and replace with ceramic tile. I am not concerned about installation procedure, however I am concerned about the coach "Flexing" too much.
Has anyone done this before, or have a tile shower from the factory??
Thanks

At first glance my gut is telling me no way would I put tiles in my shower. I think that with grout, tiles, a saturated enviroment and a moving coach is a recipe for disaster. Sometimes its not about if you can do it but should you.

I have seen tile in the showers of quite a few newer RV's. So you would think it would be fine.

We have tile all over our floors and this seems to be working despite any flex, so I would presume that with the use of the right construction method it should work.

My reservation would be the added weight. I don't want to haul more than I need to.

Good luck with your project

I would think that you would be fine as long as you used a good water proofing membrane and good mastic. Tile and grout are not water proof.

Thanks for all the responses. I did email Monaco several months ago. No response. Maybe a phone call. I am not planning on doing the shower "Pan". Just the walls. If I do this, and I think I am going to, I will try to document with photos. We really like out coach, but the shower looks like an after thought. Not near the quality as the rest of the coach.

After some thought, what is behind the plastic shower, are the walls strong enough to hold tile? Might have to skin the wall with something (plywood, cement board) to hold the membrane and tile, then if you skin the wall the pan probably would not fit. Wonder what how the factory prep's the walls for tile. Getting real deep here.

Please post about your progress with this. We just remodeled our whole RV (check out my thread about that with pics). The only thing we couldn't fix was the yellowed plastic shower. I was thinking about spray painting it as I did with the sink, but the bathroom is so small I think the fumes would be unbearable. I considered getting some kind of self adhesive vinyl too but it's so many rounded corners and stuff that I think it would be hard to cover nicely.
It would be great too hear about your experiences with this!

My plan in my brain is remove the shower stall only. As for now, I am going to leave the pan. I assume that the wall board that you can see in the bathroom is also behind the shower stall and will have to be cut out, and replaced with crete board. Crete board dosen't have any structural advantages, so I will have to sheet the wall inbetween the wall studs. I am going to use a small tile. Nothing over 6 inches square. I think small tile will absorbe more flex. Weight is a concern. But I can stand to lose 40lbs. My biggest concern is the shower door. It curves, and has to fit almost the same as it does now.
I am going to use the best quality products I can find. There is a difference in mortar. Some has better adhiesive quality. There is also a latex you can add to mortar. I have used it for rock, not sure about tile. Will have to reaserch. I have use the 2 part epoxy grout. It is expencive, but well worth it.
Alot of other small things go along with the project. I will try to photo everything.
