Slide toppers

I’m not sure how many folks have replaced their toppers themself, but as I found it’s a very simple process. I’m left with a question I want to pose to anyone that has done it. The little screw that is driven into the C-channel into the side of the RV at each end to hold the fabric from moving. Is that really necessary? I sure don’t see how 14 foot of fabric can slide back and forth. It really messes up the channel. I had to file it smooth to allow the fabric to slide padded it. I can screw new screws back in but if rather not. Thoughts!

Usually things like that are necessary under extreme wind, road, or racking conditions that the engineers are accounting for in the design. They're the ones that are familiar with the warranty claims their company paid or denied so I'd trust their knowledge.

Having worked in heavy industrial engineering departments over the years, I'd say stick with what the engineers decided was needed under a wide range of conditions you might not be aware of.

Of course, there's no reason you can't improve on their design if you wish. Cleaning up the mess the factory may have made during installation doesn't hurt either.

Don't know how, but those things have a tendency to slide a little one way or the other! I would put the screw in or crimp the aluminum channel with pliers.

Slide topper locating screw

Well if you are replacing your slide topper and are curious about leaving that screw out , leave it out. Please let us know how it works out for you.

Put a dab of silicone in the hole before you put the screws back so you don't have any leaks.

That is what I did when I had my toppers out.... So long as it is sealed, I don't see any reason not to put the screw back in. The hole is already there, might as well fill it with a screw and sealant Vs just sealant alone.

There is currently another post on here,, somewhere, talking about the piping sliding out and the guy asking "How to get it back in?"
When they installed slide toppers on our Road Warrior they left one of these screws out and the slide topper slide down about an inch. Does not look bad but went retracting it goes in crooked and causes the material to wrinkle.

In a higher wind it could move/slide just enough to put a wrinkle in the fabric, which would become a crease when you bring the slide in, which ultimately could become a hole or tear in the fabric from being repeatedly pressed and stretched as the slide opens and closes.
