Slideout jammed
HI,
Had a new problem this weekend....
When I went to put dining slideout [driver's side] out, it stopped after about six inches. I pulled it back in, tried it again, and exact same thing.
When investigating.... it appears the vinyl {?} material underneath the slide has ripped, and crumpled up underneath the slide - thus jamming the slide and not allowing it to extend out.
I have no idea how to fix this, or how to get the slide extended to be able work on this a little easier. Has anyone ever had this happen to them before?
Also, how important is it to have the vinyl material underneath the slide in terms of repairing it?
2006 Monaco LaPalma DP
thanks,
jb

I was at Elite RV in Oregon last week ( previous Monaco employees), they found my Teflon runners failing, broken up and hanging up on the main slide glide they repaired with two new stainless steel runners 1/8" thick. My slide also stopped, a sure way to check, make a lumber T-Jack, 2x6" lumber support in shape of a T, place it under the main slide by the outer edges, jack it up slightly with a common floor jack. Pull down or away the slide seal. Look for obstruction.

Since no one responded, I'll try. If you can find someone with a fork lift that will assist, you might be able to take enough weight off the slide to work the plastic out from underneath. I would protect the bottom of the slide from the lift arms using plywood 2x6 or 4x4. As to replacing the plastic, I am not sure what it protects or if it is needed for slide function. There is a company that sells slide seals. See next post...

The Teflon is not a protection per say, it acts as a glide against the other mounted front to back Teflon glide mounted on the floor of coach ( at least in my coach). You can easily see if it's a seal issue by looking around the slide and pulling back on it looking under and around it.
I would be careful about using forklift with edge of slide framing. I watch, the previous Monaco employees just use a simple floor jack with the t shaped 2x6 in the area they wanted to inspector repair, also not much movement needed.

Your slide is cable operated. My Vacationer DP is the clone of your rig. There are no guides, rollers or anything else under your slide . The tension on the cables provide the guidance for the room. There are 2 nylon lifting blocks located at the outside corners of the floor but that's it. I haven't a clue as to why it ripped but you can lift and raise the floor with a long Wonder Bar if needed. It might give you enough of a gap to pull back the material.
Be sure to check all of your cables (one on each corner, top/ bottom and inside/outside for breakage or bad fraying. I had a cable break one time and it got wrapped up around one the hidden pulleys. It jammed the room so it wouldn't move.

Thanks for the reply Boomer - that makes sense as a good repair. Can I ask how wide are your s/s pieces?
Also, are they just installed on the bottom, or are they square pieces that go up the sides of the slideout as well?
Thanks again!

Thanks again for sharing boomer.....the more I think of this, the more I think it is a good idea and will do that on mine (I got the slide out today).
Can I ask? - is it working ok?
No problems with rubbing on floor or anything?
The more I look at mine, I think there has been water problems in the slideout -- long before I owned it by the look of the plywood.

JB they are 8" wide by23" long only on the bottom. The old ones were 4 1/4" wide approx 1 1/2" from outside edge of slide. To note I now have to add the plastic protection runners so the SS doesn't mark the ceramic floor during slide operation.

Thanks again Boomer - that is helpful.
I was thinking of wrapping around the edge of the slideout corner - up about 1 inch or something to really support the corner. I was even debating how thick to go [either 1/16 or 1/8].
Go slow once you try the slide slickers -- one thing to share boomer, once I saw the actual damage after getting the slide out, I think the slide slickers may have been the root of my damage. I made my own and were thinner than those advertised on the internet - but the damage was nearly the exact size/width of my slickers. It made me sick almost, as that was the first trip I had tried them on. I don't know how exactly, but the added thickness must have put pressure on the vinyl/plastic and tore it, thus jamming my slide. The other end of the slide also had ripped vinyl.
The only reason I had tried them, was because I put new flooring down in kitchen area.

Understand; I was real impressed with Mark at Elite I learned many valuable tips and operational techs from him during my repair. He worked on slide installation and recommended design changes. So he knows many flaws to each year or design of slides.
I kept my old broken Teflon runners from under my large slide which is hydraulic no cables. The Teflon failed from excessive contact pressures and being too thin of material. Age didn't help either. The SS wider and a touch longer much better, it slides effortlessly now.
