Slideout topper spring tension

A strong wind bellowed our slideout topper and now it won't retract when slide comes in. It's a Carefree topper with 6 allen bolts holding the end caps. 2009 Monaco Camelot. Help with repair of roll spring. Steps and photos please

Sounds like the spring may have broke. I am guessing but think you may have the SOKIII model from Carefree. Here is the manual.

Agree that it sounds like the spring broke especially since you say it will not retract at all.

It is a PITA to do. You have to basically remove the roller cover, pin the roller, remove the roller, pull the roller off the fabric, reinstall the roller, add turns to the spring (if it is not broken.... will take two people) and re-pin the roller, remove the roller again, reinstall the fabric on the roller, reinstall the roller, take the pin out, reinstall the cover.

I think I'm out of breath...

There may be other tricks but that is how the process is described in the SOKIII manual.

A useful tool for awnings is a rope with an S Hook attached. Slip the S Hook into a slot in the awning hub and wind it around like a pull starter for a lawn mower. (did i just date myself?) I find it much easier to pull on the rope to turn the awning. I can do this with one hand and pin it with the other.
