Smart Steering Wheel Problems

I have a 2000 Monaco Dynasty and the controls on steering wheel work until I start the engine then when you push the horn button the engine speeds up until I push the resume button and engine slows back down and when you push the cruise control on off button the horn honks if I shut it off and wait a minute or so everything works as it should until I start the engine then it goes stupid again. Any help with this issue is greatly appreciated it is making me pull my hair out and I have read everything that is posted on this site about a smart wheel

If you have a VIP smart wheel, they have a tech help number for you to call to trouble shoot with an actual Tech. The controller might be the problem. It is a black box with lots of wires going into it. On our Monaco it is located in the center console behind the radio.

Thank you but I have the troubleshooting guide and have even taken it to a repair shop and they said the control module is bad but I have a hard time believing that when it works as it should until the engine is started

When I first purchased my Class A, it had been sitting in storage for a year before being traded in by the previous owner, the controls on the smart wheel did not work. The dealer was clueless and advised me to take my rig to Freightliner. I call Freightliner and got an appointment a week out. Before the appointment date I was cleaning the rig. While cleaning the floor below the drivers chair happened to look up at the underside of the wheel and saw a small compartment on the wheel. I opened the compartment and saw two AAA batteries. Said to myself, hummm, maybe I should put new batteries in. Guess what, everything worked. Called Freightliner to cancel the appointment and told them that I changed the batteries. They too were clueless and said “what batteries”.

In my experience, when electronics are operating intermittently or in ways that don't make sense, then they need repair or replacement.

Don't over look a broken wire in the clock spring. This could also cause you problem. Or the wiring connection the controller could have the wires wrong.

Check to see if control module needs a chassis ground. I’ve seen many electronic gremlins due to poor chassis ground.
