Yep. But not under it. Inside the smart wheel is a battery compartment which can be seen from underneath. About the 6 o’clock position.

Sounds like in your original post the problems was intermittent. Did it remain so or is it off all the time now?

The reason I ask is that a few years ago mine was acting up (off all the time} and service discovered that the exhaust brake was stuck and not letting the cruise come on. That symptom would be off all the time. I now have the intermittent problem.

It’s more off than on. I use to be able to turn the engine off, wait a few minutes and restart. While traveling to AZ, it would work all day if I didn’t turn the engine off.

Cruise controls will not work with jake brake in “on” position. In our 2008 Dynasty our connection at the clock spring was being pulled too tight, we had the steering wheel removed and the pressure released on the wires (they call the bundle of wires a pig-tail) once this was done everything worked fine. But your jake brake must be switched off before engaging your cruise control.

The thing that comes to mind is both of them , cruise and exh brake have in
common is your brake pedal .
Braking will disable either one .
See if you can determine if the brake lights are still on when it acts up .

Mine works just fine with the engine brake on. Same with the previous DSDP on Spartan chassis

To anyone that has replaced their Clockspring -- who is the manufacturer of that spring (the manufacturer of steering column?) and what is the part number (hopefully your receipt will have this info)?
Also, please list your chassis type (Roadmaster, Freightliner, etc.) in case the clock spring varies by chassis.
Thanks

Bob
I can imagine the rush of responses may be a little overwhelming .
With that in mind please don't abandon us here because we are all interested
in what you eventually find .
We may find ourselves in the very situation you are experiencing , some
are having similar problems right now , so please come back .
I also encourage you to see if you can determine whether or not your brake
lights are staying on when the problems show up .
Maybe have someone follow behind or ????
It's possible that is where your problem is , might even be something simple .

All you guys that put clock springs in, how about a part number and controller number?
Mine is the PC version with SM209 control.
I'm looking for a clock spring that is less than the $500 Veurinks wants.

I had a 2012 American tradition that had a similar problem...would start it up and try to set the cruise control to warm up the engine and it would not work or the wiper blades either....I would turn it off and re-key it and it would normally work
A friend had 2011 Eagle and it just got so bad he had to take it to Decatur to get it fixed...C

Not sure if this is anyone else's problem or not but this past weekend on my first trip out this year with the coach my smartwheel and all functions were inoperative.
I troubleshot it to the serial buss connection on the smartwheel control box. It is a small 4 pin flat connector. I unplugged all of the connectors to look for a broken solder joint or really "anything" and found those 4 pins corroded a bit. Wiggled things around a little, reset the connector and it came to life. I still need to correctly clean those pins but it was fairly obvious that they had corroded and just stopped communicating.
Funny thing, I never had any issues before, no warning signs, it just stopped working from idle time this winter.
