Spray expanding foam...

Hello,

Where cables pass through a bulkhead Monaco sprayed some gray expanding foam to seal the hole. The foam is softer than the insulation foam spray for houses.

After 13 years and the vibration of the road some of the foam has come loose and I would like to spray some new foam in the needed areas.

What kind of foam is it? Something I can get in a spray can or does it only come as a commercial product?

Mark,
It's the same as pond foam. You can get it at Home Depot.

I have used the pond foam on holes:

https://www.greatstuff.dupont.com/pr...m-sealant.html

and the multipurpose black foam as a replacement for foam I removed from inside the wheel wells:

https://www.greatstuff.dupont.com/pr...m-sealant.html

The multipurpose foam is sandable and (latex) paintable. I don't know about the pond foam.

Some notes:

1) You don't get enough visible expansion to tell you when to stop. Thus, try to underfill.

2) Wet foam will migrate out of place by gravity.

3) Protect surfaces that might stain from droppings and overspray.

4) Wipe the applicator tip frequently.

5) Once you open a can, use it.

6) Have a couple of "spare" cans on hand, because of 5).

7) As a mouse deterrent, fill large holes with stainless steel scrub pads (link here) first, then foam through and around them.

Thank you for that info.

I have a couple holes where pipes go down thru the floor behind the bathroom vanity. I hate regular Great Stuff and was resorting to using some rags, wishing I knew what Monaco used originally. Now it's off to the store.

RustyTools-

Our coach has the same penetration. I chose to go with the stainless steel scrub pads, no foam. I was concerned that the foam expansion might push the piping into the edges of the hole, eventually causing a leak. However, it's not clear I prevented mice intrusion without the foam- it's awkward to reach the entire hole, and those mice can get small.

I did use both foam and pads on the drain into and vent of the grey water tank. (That required cutting a hole in the wood panel outside the bathroom door.) Those pipes are not under pressure, so I am not as concerned about causing a leak.

Be sure to get "Closed Cell Foam" - if you have a choice (Open Cell Foam retains moisture and you don't want that).
https://www.thomasnet.com/articles/p...cell-open-cell

Also, be careful when you spray the "expanding" foam into cracks/gaps because some foams can expand so much as they cure it can warp panels/walls.

Just got back from the hardware store. We sometimes don't have a large selection of things down here, and they suggested: "Touch 'n Foam No-Warp". Which evidently means, well, that it's not supposed to expand much. Gonna give it a try on a piece of scrap wood first. Will let y'all know.

The "foam" is used as a fire block therefore it would be wise to use a FB-Foam... 3M makes it in 12 oz. cans and it's available thru Grainger...

Ok, finished up sealing around where the pipes go thru the floor behind the sink. Used the "Touch 'n Foam No-Warp", and I like it a lot. Very sticky and closed cell, and doesn't expand very much at all (yay!), but otherwise like the other stuff out there.

Only issue I had was the twist-on nozzle-base kept getting loose and start foaming out there. Just have to remember to tighten it often.

Oh yeah, and remember to wear gloves . Did I say it's sticky?
