Steering gear issues

When I was at the Monaco Rally at Lazy Days last year, someone went through all the TRW steering boxes and made adjustments. On my 2009 Monaco Camelot, I had 3/4”play which, after correction, made steering even better.

Now I went to a 2015 Entegra Aspire, solid front axle, and I have 2” of play in the steering box. Spartan says the steering box is not adjustable, but it looks like there may be an adjustment. In fact, I don’t even really know which steering box is on my coach.

Anyone can tell me how to tell if I have a TRW gear box, and how to adjust it? I guess if I have a Greyco Granning box I’m out of luck.

John

On the side of the steering box you are looking for a 3/4" locking nut on a stud with a straight slot screwdriver head. That much play will take almost half a turn CW to correct.

step 1. ( for me ) Inspect the steering linkage on your coach with the tires loaded on the ground with someone rocking the steering wheel back and forth while someone inspected the steering linkage?

I wouldn't want to unnecessarily adjust or replace a steering gear box only to find out that you have worn steering components.

Happy Trails

The adjustment to the sector shaft is intended to set the gear backlash (set by measuring turning force of the input shaft). If you just tighten the adjustment screw you dont know if you are over tightening it. You can't tell by feel how much the screw is loading the gear. If you want to do this - I would recommend not tightening the screw more than a 1/4 turn. If it needed more than a 1/4 turn the steering box sector gear is worn out. IMO.
