Steering stabilizer-yea or nay

I know on some gassers, they are really nice to have. Has anyone put one on a DP, and what were the results?? Just curious, talking to a friend, with a 40PDQ Scepter, he put one on and likes it. Looking for more, real world, comments.
Thanks the Muffin Man.

Hi studmuffin,
I've had a steering stabilizer on every coach (gas or diesel) I've owned. I now have the Howard Precision Steering System (HPSS). This product is no longer available. I mention it because it is the first stabilizer I've had where the driver can re-center the steering while moving down the road. This feature, for me is a real winner. Today, one might consider the Blue Ox Tru-Center product. This product also allows the driver to re-center the steering while moving down the road. If I were to buy today, the Blue Ox Tru-Center is what I'd purchase.

I would not be without a steering stabilizer. The reduction in driver fatigue is well worth the price. Helping during a blowout is a feature I hope I never use.

I bought the Steer Safe steering stabilizer and installed it myself. It was easy to install. It has improved the handling of our coach significantly. The steering likes to run on center, and the coach is hardly bothered by wind. The coach also handles much better when surrounded by or being passed by those large highway trucks.

I would not hesitate to install the Steer Safe stabilizer on any future coach I buy. It has done everything that I expected a steering stabilizer to do.

Hi everyone...we are new to the world of steering stabilizers.

This may seem a simple question, but here it goes.

What is the primary purpose of having one of these on your coach? Our coach seems to drive pretty well; however we do feel the large trucks going by. We replaced our shocks with Bilstein Comforts last year and really reduced the affect of trucks and cross winds.

Does the stabilizer help even more? Your thoughts and opinions are welcome.

Thanks!

When I put a Safe-T-Plus on ours my excuse to get it was to help with control in case of a blowout. The added bonus of better tracking is the real benefit, however. We did have a blowout so my reasoning was justified. It was not an immediate blowout but was fast enough that by the time I got to the shoulder all the pressure was gone. I had no problem controlling the coach.

The main purpose of the steering stabilizer is to apply pressure to the steering gear to help it to stay in the straight ahead driving position.

When a front tire blows, that wheel wants to yank the steering in that direction, therefore causing an immediate loss of vehicle control. The steering stabilizer helps you to retain control in the effort to keep the wheels aiming straight ahead.

Any help to keep the wheels aiming in the straight ahead driving position helps reduce driver fatigue.

We have the Steer Safe installed on our other MH. A 1998 Classic Bluebird. While rounding a bend in Mexico the right front tire exploded. I was able to keep the MH from going into a huge ditch of rugged desert rocks and soil. Without the Steer Safe we would have rolled. The Howard system that Gary mentioned is reputed to the best ever. Too bas someone did not try and resurrect that product

I understand that TRW has perfected a steering box called 'Comfort Steer' or something like that. I think either Newell or Newmar coaches has picked up on that as of 2008. Reports I have read indicate that it is awesome. The only problem, I guess, is that it is not available unless you want to buy a very expensive coach to get it. I'd sure like to be able to buy it and add it on to my coach.

I agree, to date, the Howards system has been the absolute best. However, not available today. There are three systems available now: the Blue Ox Tru Center, the SafeTPlus, the Steer Safe. The verdict is still out as to which is the best. Each has its merits.

To my way of thinking: it doesn't cost that much money to install a steering stabilizer that will ensure that you can have better control of your coach when (note: I said when, not IF) you experience a front tire blowout. The other factors, such as easier handling in the wind, better control in highway ruts, better control when highway trucks are passing, are added benefits.

VERY interesting topic and comments.

I have a 2003 Fleetwood Revolution DP. Can anyone give me a "ballpark" $ number for the PARTS cost of one or more of the kits mentioned? Just curious....Thanks!!

I had the Tru Center installed at the Blue Ox factory. Right at $1,000.00 and money well spent in my opinion.

I had Camping World install the Steer Safe and was worth every penny. Made a huge difference in handling.
