Step cover

My step cover in my 2000 Monaco diplomat 38ft will not retract without me pushing it back in. Where is the retraction valve ?

If your step cover is air operated there is a solenoid valve on the firewall that controls the speed of the retract.
The valve can get gummed up, you can try taking it out and cleaning it.

There are a couple of adjustment screws that regulate the air flow to speed it up or slow it down.

There is also an exhaust port that could also plug up.

Attached is the solenoid valve parts page, the vendor number is listed, you can look it up and find adjustment instructions.

I had adjusted and cleaned my "Mac" valve several times over a two year period and finally it just gave up. Ordered a new valve and problem solved. It was about $44 bucks, easy to install and adjust. Jim is correct on the adjustment screws, though just keep a hand out to "catch"/ slow the step as it may slam as it closes. Don't want to break anything. I bought the valve here: BUCHANAN AUTOMATION ** 1920 Bickford Ave, Snohomish, WA ** 800-426-8313. Talked to Ann Delisle (Amiee). The original part number has been replaced with this one: 45A-AA2-DDBA-1BA. Good luck!

These files may help if yours is all electric.
The whole mechanism on my Endeavor/Diplomat, can be removed by taking some screws out from inside. The entry area assist arm has to be removed on mine. The thing is a bit heavy so be careful.

The switches that control it can easily become pitted and fail. My step kept jamming shut. Even after a new motor and a few mods to try to keep it from binding when closed very tightly the solution was to install a small strip of wood behind the face of the step cover so it does not retract 100%. Perhaps 98-99%, but the front face of the cover does not create any issues. You cannot tell it is being held from "closing" 100%.

The darn thing is powerful it seems and would jam against the back. No matter of rubber bumpers where the screw mechanism hits the back solved the issue.
