Step problem,

The step on my Windsor won't work. I can hear the motor trying to open it but it doesn't. I lubricant on it and it still won't open. Any suggestions?

Do you hear the motor or is it only the control box making a click?

I see you are from MA. and you survived one heck of a cold winter. Are you sure your batteries are fully charged? Low battery= low power and might be low enough to not push the steps out. You lubed the steps, you might want to disconnect the clevis pin on the motor actuator arm and allow the stairs free movement. This will allow the lubricant to work itself into all the moving parts.

Thanks. I'll try removing the pin and see what happens.

Be careful. The steps are an unforgiving pinch point. Keep your fingers out when working.

step

My 99 windsor step has stoped working after batterys where disconnected. I have found that unplugging connector at step and replugging has corrected the non function..

Stripped Gears?

It's not uncommon to find stripped gears inside. If the motor just spins that's probably the issue. Or the pin could be sheared and you have a binding issue. If it shuts off quickly by sensing the current load, meaning it's trying to move but not, it's probably a binding issue as well.

But fear not! If you end up taking the motor & gearbox off take it to a Napa, O'Reiley's, or whatever auto supply store is near you. It's almost always a re-purposed window regulator motor. Ford regulators seem to be the most popular. As another poster said, keep your fingers out of the way at all times. Disconnect all electrical power to the step before you do anything else.

I've replaced a few over the years.

I got the numbers off our motor and looked up what it cross referenced to. (It's an F150 regulator.) I bought a spare for about $30 and carry it in my fixit kit. Not having a working step is a BIG saftey issue any way you look at it.

I pulled the pin on the steps and they moved freely. So that rules that out. The motor moves but only moves a quarter inch. The motor is binding.

Is there a thread or tutorial that shows how to swap out the step motor?

Well I figured out the problem with my step. It was not the motor. The plate that holds the motor and linkage in place has a round piece that Kwikee calls a bearing. It was seized. I didn't realize that that piece had to move until after I got the new motor, put it all back together, tested it and not have it work.

After staring at it and removing twice with the same results for an hour I called my son over who is going to college at Worcester Poly Tech (He's alot smarter than me) for engineering we stared at it and removed and re-installed for another hour with the same result. He than left so I stared again by myself. Then it hit me like a ton of bricks. The round piece on the cover needs to move. Here is a link to the kit I need to fix my problem. KWIKEE 909534000 - Kwikee Linkage Kit For Step Series 909534000 - RV Plus

The lesson learned was to test the motor and make sure that is the problem. In my case the motor was fine and the linkage was seized. I hope this helps.
