Need the Manual

Find and download the manual, then look at troubleshooting with it. Many videos online and in the forums are many answers. I could only guess without the make/model.
BUT, if it won't go in, good chance it is the contact that indicates when the door is closed, otherwise it has no clue if it is open or closed. So this is typically a magnet on the door and a magnetically operated switch on the frame, they operate together. Start there.

Good Luck!

I had this problem, turned out to be a bad magnet in the door frame. Good luck getting the old one out and a new wire in, they loved that expanding foam.

Is there a on/off switch for the steps somewhere

on my coach the steps will not retract if my switch is off when I close the door but when I start the coach they will then retract

The manual states to lubricate all pivot joints monthly or prior to use. Mine won’t operate well, or at all, if I miss that part.

Check all of the wiring to the left of the steps as they are exposed to the elements and can break. That's what happened with mine. Be careful cause the steps can come out quickly if that is the problem. Then you wiggle my wires they would work for a cycle. Once we found the break or crack in the wiring and fixed. It worked as it should. I used connectors and heat shrink for the repair.

What brand of steps? If Kwikee, they have some great troubleshooting procedures.

As the step motor gets older the armature in the motor gets worn. One thing you might try is to take a hammer and bump the step motor as you open the door. This will temporarily make the step motor turn as you open the door. It will probably work for a time before freezing up again. The motor can be replaced if you are handy, not too hard. Hopefully, someone who has replaced theirs will chime in and tell where you can find one. Not too expensive as I recall. Good luck.

Congrats on repair, hopefully it was just a bad connection.

I had a similar situation awhile back and turned out it was a poor ground down by the step motor.

Mine quit working and it was corrosion at wiring harness connectors.

Mine stopped working and read on here some place to try tapping the motor (Notice I said Tapping don't hit it hard) my steps did this just two times otherwise they work as they should, if it works you may have a flat spot on you motor armature, I haven't replaced the motor as yet.
