STOP ENGINE Light

I had the Stop Engine light cone on yesterday and it really concerned me. The owners manual simply states that the light will come on if certain engine parameters are out of sync.

My question is, what kinds of things can make thus light come on? I had just started the engine and it was idling at about 800!rpm when it came on.

Hi Stan
I had my stop engine light come on 2 years ago. For me it was clogged fuel filters. I had always changed my filters every 5K miles. I was told I could easily go 10K miles. Around 7K miles on the filters the warning light came on. Soon after the stop engine light came on. The clogged fuel filters caused the high pressure fuel pump to have pressure issues. Once I had the filters changed, my issue was gone. Now I change my filters every 5K miles again.
Another cause can be your low pressure lift fuel pump. If it's pressure drops too much it doesn't feed the high pressure pump enough fuel and the stop engine light comes on.
If all your gauges are reading in spec, temp, oil pressure, etc. is probably a fuel issue.

In my manual it says

Alerts of severe out of range condition within the engine protection
circuits. Pull over and stop as soon as possible. Shut-off engine to avoid
engine damage.

This could be caused by low oil, low oil pressure, coolant issue. I would check all fluid levels to start with.

If in doubt I would get diagnostics run on the engine to see if a fault code is still present.

We had that happen in our previous rig, a '94 Dynasty. In our case, it happened two or three times. Each time, the event started with the engine idling fine, but when I tried to drive, there was minimal power and it ran rough.

First, I tried gentle throttle, fast idle and brief revving in neutral, changing the gear choices, the park brake, and then after a couple of minutes the "Stop Engine" came on. It scared the tar out of me. I was trying to pull onto the busy US95 in Cascade, Idaho, and traffic was not good.

End result is that I shut it down for about a minute and then tried it again. Whatever was the issue cleared, and we went on our way. I think it happened a couple more time, and that was it. In each case, shutting down and re-starting the engine cleared both the problem and the trouble light. Unfortunately I don't recall that I did anything in the way of repair, service or maintenance that would have corrected the problem, and it never happened again.

I had the stop engine light come on in conjunction with the low coolant light. The engine will de rate shortly after the stop engine light comes on to protect the engine.
In our case the coolant surge tank level sensor was leaking and shorting it out giving a false reading that it was low on coolant. This set off the stop engine light.
I knew I wasn't low as I wasn't overheating per the silverleaf monitoring system and visually checking that I had the proper coolant level.
I also called Cummins and asked their thoughts as I was in the middle of Arkansas and not close to a repair facility. They concurred that it was likely the coolant level sensor.
I disconnected the wire to the sensor and noticed a very small amount of fluid in the sensor itself. Restarted the engine, stop engine light was gone but check engine light was on. Cummins said that the check engine light wouldn't cause the engine to de rate like the stop engine light. I drove the rest of the way to California that way. Ordered a sensor on line and it was waiting for me when I got there. Long story short, check your coolant tank sensor. You might get lucky and solve your problem

Just had my stop engine light come on and it Derated as well.I checked the on board computer and it didn't throw any codes. It is now at a Cummins repair center, and they told me it is a acelerator sensor. It showed up on ECM computer. Thanks

Reporting back on my final result: Stop Engine light came on due to low coolant. The surge tank hose rubbed through and was loosing coolant. New hose and coolant top off and the light went out. My 07 Knight does not have a Low Coolant light. When coolant is low, the Stop Engine light comes on which gives you a bit of a scare.

I had recently replaced my nylon/plastic surge tank with an aluminum one from Source Engineering. When I ordered it Jim at Source recommended replacing the bottom hose which I did. He said he had heard several people having that hose fail. I guess he knew since it happened to you Stan.

I'm sure when you saw the STOP ENGINE light you're heart sank to your stomach. I know mine would have. Glad it wasn't something bad and $$$$$.
