Surge protector question

On my new to me 1999 executive, I have an original TRACE inverter. It is working well. It apparently has a built in surge protector. How good is it ? Do I need to add Surge Guard ? Jon

Hi Jon; My thoughts on your question is I would want to handle any surge at the source, where the 50 amp cord is plugged in, and not inside the coach itself. I have the 2000 watt Trace inverter in my 01 Windsor and was not aware of what you mentioned in your post. A friend of mine with a Monaco coach has one of the Progressive units and I like what it does. Still have not gotten off my keister and purchased one yet. If I don't I will regret not getting one when something does happen. Just my opinion. Too many electronics and etc. to damage if no protection from surges or low voltage. I keep being told that having a surge protector plus low voltage identification is real cheap insurance.

The surge protector in the inverter does not protect the whole rv, only the things that run off of the plugs that are supported by the inverter. If you want to be protected you need surge protection at the point the shore power enters the RV.

agree with above. Surge protector (usually) in transfer switch. At 419 rally, asked a HR rep about the transfer switch (with surge protector) in my MH. He confirmed that it would not fully protect faulty, incoming electricity. I installed a Progressive (hard wired) unit before the transfer switch. At a camp in the Keys, there was a surge in electric. 3/4 MH's had damaged refer's, computers, and TV's. Mine not effected.
