Here's hoping your next post will be to tell us that you got it fixed! Yippeee (in advance). I've been-there-done-that and it IS a hassle.

BTW, there ain't nothing on these coaches:"...That makes things a little easier (and not that expensive)...". Keep thinking like that, and you're sure to jinx yourself

Good luck.

If coolant isn't circulating properly that will definitely flag a overheating code and shut down.

As for the earlier posters with the governor actuator, I have run across two of them now, my 10kW and a friend's 12.5kW, that also ohm'd out properly but after replacing the actuator they ran rock solid. I took mine apart and noticed that the actuator pintle wasn't moving as freely as I thought it should. I am thinking that the hunting or surging is coming from the actuator not reacting fast enough which is causing the hunting issue. The resistance only measures the actual coil inside so I think electrically they are functioning find, just not fast enough.

That's my take anyway.

Mike

Hey Guys,

Thanks for your feedback. So you were right, it ain't going to be easy or cheap. The one belt for the water pump is $300, if you can find it. The other one, for the drive, is about $30 and I have been able to locate it. Changing them is apparently a job and a half. Poor design is at fault.

Somebody told me that there was a recall on my 12.5 A-type generator. Does anyone know anything about that?

I think I am going to look for a recommendation on a Cummins certified technician. I am in North Georgia now, but will soon have the coach in south-west Florida. If anyone knows of a tech that makes house calls, please let me know.

Any chance you're going near Wildwood FL on your trip?

The old Monaco Service Facility (then changed to 'Alliance Coach', and now 'LazyDays') is there. Great place, and they have some of the original Monaco techs still there. Even has a camping lot.

I am not aware of a recall on the 12.5k Onan, but there is a kit to convert it to a crankshaft driven fan. It is kit number 541-1293.
The kit was expensive and I'm not sure any better than the original design.

Several guys on this forum have changed the belts without removing the generator. You have to put the motorhome up as high as it will go on the air ride and remove all the side panels.

Posted below is the instruction sheet for the fan conversion.

Thanks vito.a! Do you know what they ended up using for the belts? I heard about one OEM belt costing $300, but I can't even find that one. I obviously would prefer to pay a lot less but do want to make sure that both will be durable.

Well I am no Onan expert but have had the chance to work on mine many times
I believe they used 2 belts at first then later went to one belt, then a wider one belt design, then switched to Kubota engines which I assume you don't have. Kubota engines came along around 2007

A Cummins dealer should be able to look your belt part number up via your model and serial number. Spec A was going to likely be two belts to which Vito posted the kit number to convert to a single belt design.

The belt is a bear to get two the first time as it is a steep learning curve however it is not really technical in nature.

If for some reason you simply cannot obtain a belt from Onan, you can source one locally by measuring what you have left and duplicating it at a NAPA or similar. Also, it will very likely have a part number on the belt if it is not ruined in that spot. Again, NAPA should be able to cross it to something for you.
They are small belts, 7/16 by about 32 inches for the revised spec A and 1/2 inch by about 32 inches for the Spec B and C as I recall.

After turning the kill switch off to be sure the engine can't crank, you may be able to reach in there and extract the belt pieces from the top access cover. It is worth trying.

My Onan/Cummins dealer just sold me two belts for $18.00 each, I am a spec C with this coach, was a revised A on my previous coach.

Hope this helps.

That does help Windecker - thank you!

I will contact a Cummins dealer and see what they have to say on the belts. Mine is a type A generator (the one you don't want to have). I was able to find a busted NAPA belt, by taking over the side panel. Haven't ventured any further into it.

Hopefully I will have some feedback to give to others soon! Thanks again!

Hockeydiesel,

First of all, I am a huge hockey fan. Play hockey, as well as coach my son's bantam hockey team. So nice handle!

You said Spec C, so I assume it doesn't apply to me since I have a Spec A. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi Bob (and others),

I have a 5HDKCB11-506A Spec A 12,500 W generator. I can't seem to confirm that mine uses the same actuator as the one you indicate below. I am taking it in for service to get belts replaced, but it seems like it may need an actuator, due to surging. If that is the case, I want to be able to quickly order one.

I looked in this parts manual, but was only able to see something called a "Governor Actuator" (pg 14): https://www.rvtechlibrary.com/genera...n10KWparts.pdf

Am I not lookling in the right place?

Cheers,

I believe Item 11 on page 14 part number 33-0707 is your gvn that most of us have had issues with at one time or another (Isuzu engine models).

You would want to double check your serial number and model number with an Cummins/Onan dealer before ordering I would think, just in case.

Like other have said, they normally will ohm out OK but still not work correctly. Mine started working just be cleaning the connection points as I recall. Easy to do, right through the oil filter access panel.

On a Kubota I am able to remove the governor actuator with the top cover of the generator removed, is the Isuzu similar? I tested it for smoothness of the plunger this summer when I had intermittent shutoff issues. (Bad generator control board)

Not to hijack but Mike what happened to your early photos?

The actuator on the Isuzu is also easily accessible with the cover off. I had a generator control board fail as well but it was for a different issue with charging, nothing to do with the surging.

As for my earlier pictures, they fell into the Tinypic black hole. Kind of sucks as I have a LOT of pictures that I had used Tinypic for posting and now they are gone.
