surround sound from tv in o6 endeavor

Wondering (before I go ahead and pull things apart) for those who have the same rca dvd, vcr as I do how do you get the tv to go thru to the surround speakers. Right now the best i can get is very low volume out of speakers with the rca volume up 100%. Looks like every thing goes into the video selector box and then to the vcr, dvd. Wondering if the audio plugs should go direct from tv to the rca? Recovering from a back injury and sure would like a fast fix . Thanks
