To sleep number or not questions?

We just got our 2008 HR Ambassador 40SKQ in Oct. 2021. It originally had an air mattress in bedroom, but was replaced with a very heavy foam mattress. Although it sleeps ok we have a Sleep Number at home and we love it. Current mattress is so heavy one of the struts pulled away from side support. Almost impossible to lift bed to get at storage. Everyones mattress choice is a varying equation.

For those that have replaced air for regular mattress. Have you replaced struts and if so what weight? Any other issues beside weight?

For those with either original or replaced with air mattress. If original, where was pump mounted, power supplied and hoses run? If replacing regular mattress. Where did you put all hardware.

I'm on the fence. We have an unused older queen sleep number at home with hard wired controls. Will it be easier to just replace the struts or would it be a simple install if it originally had an air bed?

Thanx - Dean

Hi Dean! We put a heavy natural latex foam topper over our Sleep Number mattress. I replace the gas struts with heavier ones but I'm still having trouble lifting the bed. I doubt that anyone can give you accurate info because it will depend on the weight of your mattress, which may be totally different than someone else's mattress.

Your side brackets are probably secured with wood screws, which would tend to pull out with too much weight. You can replace them with bolts and nuts all the way through the wood.

Keep us updated with the results!

We have a sleep number. The pump is located under the bed on the forward side. There is an outlet under there for that and it was cable-tied into place. The hoses run through a slot that was cut at the head of the bed frame on each side and they plug into the mattress there. We also put a foam topper on the mattress and the struts do not hold it up. I cut a piece of wood as a prop to hold the bed up if needed. Only about 2/3 of the bed base folds up, the rest is solid. Hope this may help, Happy Trails, Bert

Dean-

Our coach came with a Sleep Number mattress. In our house we had a Tempur-Pedic. After sleeping on the coach's Sleep Number we bought the matching "home" model to replace the Temper-Pedic.

We made a number of improvements to the coach in 2020, and one was to replace the Sleep Number with the updated mattress of the same dimensions and features (the R5 model).

As far as the struts are concerned, the 2008-era Monaco OEM ones are enough to help lift the platform, but not enough to keep it elevated. I use an expandable pole for that.

The pump is different between the original and new SN mattress. Both fit under the platform, but I mounted the new pump differently. The tubing, electric are as "Jobert" describes.

If you are happy with sleeping on a Sleep Number, I recommend you replace the foam with an SN. It's tough enough moving the SN around to make the bed, without the extra weight.

I'm assuming yours is similar. Ours has a short section at foot of bed that is storage for the extra dining chairs. The other portion was boxed in, but only gives a couple inches of storage (possibly blankets or something). Was your pump in this area or in the enclosed area closer to head of bed? Not knowing your floorplan for sure. Our bed is curbside so forward section would be toward bathroom. I will have to dig into it. I didn't pay close enough attention to the layout the short time I lifted the bed when I found the one disconnected strut. It was very hard to hold up. I'm assuming the section the chairs are in must have a bottom or the chairs would drag across the carpet. My list of to do items is getting longer :(

Thanx - Dean
