Tow vehicle question
Good morning, I have already checked the towing threads and I did not see anything referencing my ? We purchased our new 2013 Toyota Highlander assuming and without verifying it could be towed (with all four wheels down) prior to purchasing our motorhome.
Well the manual says DO NOT tow. I contacted REMCO, very helpful. I was told the highlander has two transmissions, one could have their pump installed (U151) and the other could not (U150). Fortunately I have the one you can install the pump on.
I spoke to the dealer who said if the transmission failed because of the pump, our warranty would be void. Well, I purchased an 8-year/120K mile warranty, which I would hate to void.
So... does anyone out there have the highlander or know of anyone that had the pump installed? any issues? or, anyone with the same scenario that the REMCO system worked safely on?
We currently tow a wrangler but we don't like it. I can have the pump installed for about 3K, or purchased a good used CRV for 8-12K. thnx.

Another option is to trailer the toad. I did for 8 years and the plus is you can backup, the minus is the trailer, so you want pull thru. Had a tilt bed so no ramps and is EZ parking in the pull thru, just drive on. Cost would be half another toad, but no worry about transmission. Time and hookup less than towing 4 down, drive on 4 straps and your good to go. You will need a brake controller if you were to go this route.

We love our CRV! I would not take the chance on voiding the warranty!

You can get a decent open trailer for 3K and tow anything that will fit. Trailers are great but you do need to plan ahead for RV sites that are long enough so your don't have to drop the trailer.

Is your Highlander all wheel drive?
If only front wheel drive a tow dolly is a good option.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions and comments. I'm thinking we're going to look for the Honda CRV. The only drawback after looking on line at the Honda Manual is, the top towing speed of 65-MPH. Now I'm not saying I drive faster than that, but you know, there are states with greater speed limits and I wouldn't want to break the law by impeding traffic...Just some humor. Anyhow thanks again and until the next time.

I belive that after 2014 the CRV is not flat towable. CVT transmission.

Yeah, the new ones are not--I'm not sure when that started though. You don't want to repeat the same mistake twice!

Looking at towing guides I stayed away from TH. Research is key and reading the manual if you can, most are available online.

No CR-V after the 2014 year is towable four down. I just bought a 2014 CR-V all set for towing with 6,080 miles on it. Now I find that the brakes are pretty well shot and the parking brake doesn't hold. Previous owner probably drove with the parking brake on. Easy to do, I did it with the '05 Ody a few years ago. Need to rebuild the brakes on both rigs when the weather gets better!
