Trace engineering 2000 watt inverter running

Noticed that their is a slight humming noise from the inverter even when it's shut off and not hooked to shore power. Is this normal and If so, I'm presuming it has a phantom draw on the batteries. Seems my batteries will go down to 50% in one week with the phantom draws which seems fast for 4 CG2 440 total amp hour batteries.

Are you turning the battery disconnect switches OFF in the battery compartment? If not, then yes the Inverter is still doing its thing and making 110 vac by drawing power from your batteries. That is what it is designed to do IF the battery cut-off switch in not OFF. Some Inverters have a switch on then that can be turned off.

Also if the battery switch is still on, the memory in your radio, TV and other electronic devices will still be powered by the batteries.

I do not have the battery disconnect switch off. My inverter has a remote switch to turn it on and off at my power distribution so the inverter function itself is "off" and not invertering or making power to my outlets. There is also a switch on the inverter itself, and when I shut that off, I still hear the inverter with a slight hum or buzz.

My experience:
With no shore power and the inverter turned off (remotely or locally), there should not be a buzz. In this situation of "no shore power", the buzz (a 60Hz sound or its harmonic) means that the inverter is indeed drawing battery power.....to make the buzz.

Sounds like rather than a complete shut-down, the inverter is only going to a standby mode (no AC output, but none-the-less drawing some minor current from the batteries). It's almost as if your unit has been programmed to go into "standby" and never turn off. Your inverter user manual might help you reprogram this beast. Otherwise, you've got a inverter that's just "not listening" to your commands.

Input back to Rex:
Most (all?) large-current inverters are direct-connected to the house battery bank, thus not wired thru the battery disconnect switch. Did I read/interpret your posting correctly?

The way mine works, when plugged into shore power the inverter/converter makes DC to charge the house batts and run 12vdc units in the house. The inverter in standby does not make A/C. Unplugging from shore power with the inverter on the unit makes 110 A/C. With the coach unplugged from shore power and the inverter off it makes no a/c and the 12vdc is provided by the batts. Mine doesn't hum when unplugged and the inverter off.

Thank you for the feedback. Looks like its drawing power as suspected. Time to see why it's not shutting down like it should. I guess it explains why my batteries draw down quicker than I expected with minimum loads.
