It hit me yesterday that another solution is to adjust the brake controller to 0 when doing long downhill runs.

So I am not familiar at all towing with the coach and this Exhaust brake deal.

The only time this exhaust brake/trailer brakes ON, is an issue is for a LONG run down the mountains or something is this correct? So just a 10 or 15 second hit on the exhaust brake pulling off the interstate would not really be an issue for the trailer brakes coming on with the EX brake? you are talking a 5 minute run down a mountain pass is the issue.

Correct - most exhaust brakes are set up to turn the brake lights on when the exhaust brake is activated - which in turn activates the trailer brake controller.

Well, not sure if it is common or not however my 2002 Monaco Windsor PacBrake PRXB Exhaust Brake has no effect on the activation of the electric brakes on my 12,000 lb trailer that I haul behind me.

I personally did all of the wiring back in 2009 and have hauled the trailer all over the North American Continent for the past 7 years without a problem.

The ONLY time my trailers electric brakes are activated is when I actually step on the service brakes. And yes, the brake lights on my coach and trailer do light up when the Exhaust Brake has been activated which has been verified.

If there is no voltage going to the electric brakes as commanded by the electric brake controller then the trailer brakes are not activated. There is only ONE wire going to the electric brakes and that is from the Tekonsha P3 Electric Brake Controller.

I guess Monaco had wired their coaches differently than most other brands. Maybe the difference is in how each manufacturer determined how to wire the Exhaust Brake. Obviously both of my systems are isolated from each other.

Frankly I like the fact that the brake lights come on when I am either using the Service Brakes or the Exhaust Brake. A brake is a brake, both are designed to slow you down.

Richard, funny how Monaco doesn't seem to have uniformity in this issue. My buddies Diplomat operates exactly as yours, taillights illuminate but does not activate the brake controller. However, my Dynasty would activate the brake controller when the tail lights were illuminated by the Jake Brake. I wired mine through the relay about 10 years ago now and works perfectly by just taking the brake controller out of the equation when descending a grade and using the compression brake. That way my trailer lights still illuminate but the brake controller doesn't activate the trailer brakes. Like you, I want my trailer brake lights coming on when using the compression brake.

I will test it using my truck soon.
How well did it work? Oops! Didn't see previous answers!

No problem, I still need to update. I have been buried at work and have still not installed it. The fact I can't find a switched 12v at the engine bay held me up. I will have to run a wire from the front of the coach to the back, which I want to do when the weather is good and when I have the time to not be rushed. That means weekend, and I've been gone almost every weekend lately, and this weekend is no different. We are headed to Fredericksburg, TX this weekend, and not towing, so I'm not rushed, but yet another weekend will go by without completing the install.
