Transmission cooler failure
Hello out there. Well, it looks like my transmission cooler puked and took my transmission with it. It suddenly shifted "differently", so I checked it and "milk" was pouring out of my coolant recovery tank. I got it off the road, (about 5 miles later) before it would hardly move.
Now for the interesting part, this is the second time in 6000 miles that this happened. The last time I caught it immediately and miraculously, no transmission damage occurred. Just a new cooler and several thousand dollars later I was back on the road.
I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem. I have to find out if this was a freak occurrence, defective replacement cooler, or what. The coach is a 2002 Monaco Windsor 40' with 118,000 miles on it. Thanks for reading Mike

Not sure how your plumbed but cooler sounds like the culprit, does your trans cooler also run through radiator.

Yes. Basically it's a heat exchanger. It's a side mount sandwiched between the radiator and the CAC. It draws air through it as well.

“Milk” sounds like a coolant is mixing with an oil.

Bad radiator
Yes. The trans cooler failed allowing coolant and trans fluid to mix which took out the transmission. By the way, I only had 5800 miles on a " new" cooler. Hmmmm🤔

Mike,
Look into Hayden coolers as they have units you can run independent of the radiator both with or without electric fans and manual or electric switches. Had a friend do this to his motorhome after another guy had the same issue as you. No more contamination issues and generally better cooling.
I've run them on everything from Harleys to 3/4 ton trucks with excellent results.

Hopefully it was still in warranty. Who installed it? Another possible liability claim.
EDIT
It appears your F53 chassis only came with a factory trans fluid-water radiator cooler system. If so, it looks like a radiator failure. Go with IBDAGRIZ's solution.

Sounds like it is in radiator, I would disconnect trans lines, then pressure them up and check for bubbles in radiator coolant, if no bubbles I would leave a pressure gauge on it and watch for pressure drop.

Radaitors

Check this for rear radiator Monaco's. All three...Radiator, CAC and trans cooler ...with a new shroud. Less than some guys have paid just for the radiator.
I know the guy that bought these when Monaco closed up. They are brand new old stock, on pallets, not damaged. Too bad they didn't get any side rads.

2 years, so it's just out,(Oct.18). I'm working with the manufacturer and installer as to recovering any of this.

Interesting two coolers failed, could the culprit be the transmission ? what controls the pressure in the cooler lines, can a restricted return line create sufficient pressure to rupture the cooler. Just thinking.

Bad radiator
Interesting thought Clifford. As far as I know, the pump that circulates the fluid is located in the transmission. Hopefully that can be checked in during the R&R.
Thanks for the suggestion. Mike

Good idea if both trans and coolant weren't already mixed and blowing out the coolent recovery bottle.
