Not sure where you are, but if you are near Tucson I can recommend Simonsen Generator Service, 520-889-9581

The Cummins service center in Phoenix also has (had?) a very competent Onan tech, but they are much more expensive than Simonsen.

Cheers,

Bob

Thanks Windecker for the video. I didn't know it was that easy to change Gen Brushes. Have not had any major Gen problems.

Thanks for the information Bob! I've saved it in my PC for future trips through Tucson.

Dale,
Can I assume you got the genset repaired?
Curious what the issue wound up being.

After I sold it, I heard my old 99 Signature dropped one leg in the genset caused by the control board going bad. Not sure if the gen was shutting down or not though.

We arrived in C. Florida without too much hardship, by not using our generator. I've been putting out other fires since arriving and have yet to take it into Cummins. I'm afraid of what the bill is going to be! I'll post the results when I get them. Thank you.

I just saw this thread. My Onan did the run and shut down thing last spring kind of like yours is doing. I took it to Cummins in Ocala and it was the temp sensor about a 25 dollar part

Man, that would be great! Thanks mlh2013. I've noted that and will convey to the tech when I get over to Cummins. Was that "easy" to diagnose? i.e. did they have to pull the Gen set out of the carriage to find that?

Thank you for the information!

I had the temp sensor go bad on my 7.5 onan, but it would run for a few minutes before it shut down,, and give high temp code when it did. Finally got where it wouldn't start, but would turn over. I knew coolant, oil and belt were fine so I pulled the wire off the sensor, and it ran fine. It is common for the sensor to break off in the generator,, and mine did, the threaded part came out fine leaving the sensor in the generator. By pulling the thermostat housing I could stuff some rags below the temp sensor and knock it out with a punch. Good time to replace the thermostat.
Your trouble really doesn't sound like what I had but may help in the future.

Dale, my gen is on a hydraulic slide out. It took the tech maybe one hr. to change the sensor. He took the top cover off the gen and it is right up on the top. He did say that some break off when trying to screw it out. Mine screwed out with no trouble. Good luck to you, let us know the outcome.

That breaker on the generator itself is the one the manual is referring to.
