I have a 08 Diplomat 36 with a Cummins ISL 400. The heat shield that covers the turbo to protect the floor of the coach keeps cracking. The bracket for the shield mounts at the cylinder head and hangs out about 12 inches to cover the turbo. There is no support for the turbo end of the bracket. The cracks do not cause a mechanical failure other than a tin type ringing noise from the engine area. I have taken the shield off twice to have a shop tig-weld the cracks. Has anyone else experienced this problem and if so what have you done to remedy? I greatly appreciate your suggestions and or comments.

12" of overhang with no support ; sounds like it's time to consider fabricating an extra support bracket for the existing shield , or abandoning the shield attached to the engine and fabricate one that mounts to the floor to avoid the vibrations that are the cause of the failure.

Rich, the turbo heat shield also cracked on my 07 36PDQ diplomat, probably in the same place as yours. I removed the portion of the shield that was cracked and did not consider repair. There was still a portion of the shield remaining that would prevent excessive heat from causing a problem elsewhere. There is ample ventilation across the turbo from the rear fan which is always spinning with engine running. I have repeatedly checked for any issues with heat on hatch cover and there have been none whatsoever. Any fix to the extension (over hang) without support will eventually fail and the part may fall in vital area (radiator?) Just my thoughts ... Jim

Check out my post #181 in Quick tips and Modification section. Mine came with no shield.

I have since replaced the shield with an exhaust/turbo wrap from ATP.

Henrik, Danes Are Coming/Danes on Tour, installed my aluminum heat shield on his two years ago in QZ. I took it to QZ for the "Free Stuff" table, where folks can pick up needed items.

I had the exact same problem with mine. I welded it twice and it still failed due to excessive vibration from the engine. So I made up a new shield out of aluminum and attached it to the side of the opening above the engine with angle brackets and self-tapping screws. No more vibration and easier to remove. So far it has lasted 2 1/2 years.
