VIP smartwheel controller setting
good morning all,
I have a new to me 2000 40' monaco windsor DP coach. it has the 209 smart wheel with a 2007 SM210 controller box. The cruise control has never worked since I bought the coach. I had the truck garage check the ECM. It showed the Set and resume switches but not the on/off. all else checked fine with the ECM. I tested the wheel controls and the SM210 controller and all checked out operating properly. My question is this, there is a JP1. Jumper that can be set on A,B, or C. When I first observed the jumper was set to B. How do I know if this is the correct setting or if it was mis set when the sm module was udated. The previous owner is no help and neither was the $900 Peterbuilt truck garage.
as I understand it the jumper controls the common armature contact on the on/off cruise switch only. Could this be the cause of my problem since all else tests OK?
Thanks,
Don

hello Ken,
thanks for taking the time to reply. I have been through the VIP troubleshooting guide. Everything tests properly with the steering wheel and the controller box. All of the other features on the wheel, wipers, horn, light flashers etc work fine. That's why I was wondering if the jumper could simply be in the wrong setting. I am not an electrical engineer but, from the monaco schematic, it appears to me that the cruise common connection for all 4 relays connects to pin J11/5. There is no connection for the relays shown to the J2/ ground or key ignition terminal. if I am reading it properly that should put the jumper in the A position not B. that said, I do not want to fry the SM210 by trying it without another opinion.
Also, if I am evading it correctly, that jumper only relates to the cruise control on/off relay which is the only function that is not showing up on the ECM diagnostic computer check.
any thoughts??

Don,
I have a 2001 Dynasty and had a very similar problem with the cruise control not working, which prompted me to buy a replacement VIP Smart Wheel control module. While I was waiting for the arrival of the module I started to do some troubleshooting of my own which cured the problem. Henceforth I now carry a brand new smart wheel module as a spare.
What I found was that by unplugging each of the three large electrical wiring connector blocks coming from the module and each of the electrical terminal blocks that slides onto the electrical pins on the smart wheel control module circuit board, then cleaning all the terminals and using some dielectric grease prior to reconnecting them, it cured the problem and has worked perfectly every since.
Hope this helps in your efforts to find an easy solution to your cruise control problem.
Jack

hi Jack,
Thanks for the thoughts. I did R&R all of the connectors to do the troubleshooting tests. I cleaned all of the contacts before reassembly. we will see if it makes any difference.
Do you happen to remember what position your jumper was in On the control board. Your 2001 dynasty should have be on the same RM8H Roadmaster chassis as my coach

i would make sure it dos not need a pull UP or DOWN resistor
most CC well not come on going to ground ... they want to make sure it can not go nuts with cut/hot/fire/damage wring
so they resistor like a 120 ohm 7 watt resistor . and most has a hard wire that can brake so you may have just lost or it has gone bad in some where in the line
... may not be it but some thing to think about

Don,
Since I am fortunate to have my RV at home in an attached RV garage, I went out and took a few photos that will hopefully assist in getting your Cruise Control to work again. Unfortunately, as we both know you can not determine functionality until you actually take it for a test drive.
It appears that my jumper is on pin set 'C' and has been that way since new.
I also have a Smart Wheel Owners Manual and Trouble Shooting Manual and would be glad to provide them to you if you so desire.
Hope this helps and good luck and Happy RV'g
Jack

Wow, THANK YOU Yukon Jack.
you have the same wheel, controller and chassis as mine. Makes me think the jumper could be the problem.
thanks again

Follow up
just in case anyone has this issue in the future, the incorrect jumper setting was my issue. On my coach, position A is the correct position. VIP tech support stated that position b has not been used since the mid 90's and the vast majority of coaches use position c although a few use A. Hope this helps someone in the future
