VMSpc Questions

I just got mine yesterday after a long debate with myself on whether or not I needed it. Those of you that have it seem to like it.

My first question is where do you mount your pc? I have looked and looked in my Ambassador and cannot find a place for my Samsung netbook that would be convenient and/or safe. There is not a flat place on the driver's side dash for it to sit plus I am afraid it would not be good to block any vision area of the windshield. Also, unless it is strapped down it would be a missile in an accident. Any suggestions?

Second question: I am not very computer savy and, since it's Saturday, I can't call Silverleaf. It came with a CD that is supposed to be installed when you hook up to the computer the first time. I suppose it has some sort of program to run the system. I had already downloaded the free software from their website and built my screen with the info I want. I assume I am going to have get a CD driver to attach to the computer? Anyone know if there a way around this?

The best way to mount your PC is with a vehicle mounting kit. I have one from Wolf that allows it to be rotated, tilted or raised/lowered in height. The mount is removeable leaving only the mounting column in place which is unobtrusive. Cost was @$120.

As far as a CD drive, you can get a USB DVD/CW burner for well under $50.00. It has the advantage of being able to play DVD's or burn CD's or make your own DVD's. All come with basic burner software and DVD player. Drivers are built into Windows.

Other option is have a friend with a PC copy the CD to a USB thumb drive and install your software from it.

I have used a VMSpc since 2000 and I have never loaded the program from a CD. Every time they come out with a new version I download it online and install it.

My favorite son-in-law (the only one) downloaded the CD to an SD card, which fits a slot on my computer. It works! The only thing I didn't see it reading was the oil temp box. I tried to get it to work without the download but it wouldn't.

Pretty amazing. Says I have been getting 8.8 mpg since day one but not sure how accurate that is.

Different Approach

I took a different approach and mounted an old laptop (you can find them cheap lots of places) beside the drivers seat and then bought a small touchscreen monitor to mount by the A-pillar using the Ram-mounts system.. I can control the laptop from the small monitor. I was trying to solve several problems; first was running the extra cords required from the VSM and the relatively larger laptop power laptop power supply thru the dash, second was safely mounting the heavier laptop/ netbook/ table, and third was ability to periodically update the computer without having to change the dash mount. An unexpected benefit was the monitor has an input I can use to connect to the Weldex camera monitor ( which I cant see from the drivers seat without doing contorsions) . I have not hooked the Weldex to it yet, but I think it will be much better and it has auto swap capability. Just another approach to solve the same problem
