Water in fuel filter

Hello group. Our water in fuel light came a calling on the dash. 2008 Monaco Dynasty Detroit Diesel series 60. Manuel called for an easy fix. Open the valve on the fuel filter and drain the water. No problem. Ran the engine for about 5 minutes. Shut off on its own. Just not enough to restart. Suggestions? We have arranged to tow it but while sitting hoping for tips.
Thanks!

Water in fuel filter

Try cycling the ignition switch on for about 30 seconds then off. Repeat several times. Do not attempt to crank- just switch to on position, not start position. This may allow the fuel pump to refill the filter and allow the engine to start. Otherwise look in the manual for instructions about priming the fuel system after filter changes. You should not need a tow for this problem, any competent diesel mechanic should be able to reprime the system and get you going.

You are only supposed to take out an once or so to clear the water. If you took out too much you could fill the filter with diesel (messy).
We had the problem a few times with never any water in the fuel; it was just the sensor at the bottom of the filter got wet. I read on iRV2 to pull the sensor connector off and fill it with dielectric grease. Never had that warning again. This was with our 2011 Journey.

On this subject I thought I would share the experience of a fellow Monaco owner and how he managed to fix his "water in fuel" problem....as he was driving along his dash light came on and warned of "water in fuel"....shortly afterward his engine shut down and ended up having to be towed on a Sunday afternoon. While waiting he began searching for possible causes and determined that the wiring harness connected to the sensor, located in the bottom of the clear bowl on his fuel filter, had shorted out and caused the problem. Once he disconnected the wiring harness connected to the sensor all was OK and he was able to continue on his trip. Based on his experience I purchased a "spare" wiring harness. I found that the best price was at the FilterBarn.com and cost me $34.95....whole lot cheaper than a tow. Here is the proper description of the wiring harness used in my 2009 Monaco Dynasty ISM engine: Racor WIF Sensor #30880E.

Just thought I would pass this along in case it might help someone else....

If you have s Racor fuel system, open engine access, turn ignition on and press the purge button to bleed out air of your fuel system.
